60" MMM Grease Zerks

Re: 60\" MMM Grease Zerks

Thought this thread as good a place as any to post pics of MMM maintenence. Also, prompted by this thread I thought it time to look at the bearings to see what condition they were in. Unfortunately my wife was gone so once my hands got really dirty the pic taking ceased--oh well.
Here is pic of the 60 MMM being hosted by the FEL. J

I sharpened the blades and then scrapped and pressure washed the deck. I also greased it /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. I observed the grease flowing out with the dust covers removed. Notice the center spindle is dry. J

Re: 60\" MMM Grease Zerks

Here is the pic of one of the outside spindles, notice the squeeze out of grease. The center bearing was not getting grease in sufficient quantity in my opinion and does show wear. The other bearings are in tip top condition, only normal wear. Repeated pumps into the center bearing had squeeze out on top but none outthe bottom until I had a cup or more of grease extruded on top--that bites. J

Re: 60\" MMM Grease Zerks

I finished sharpening blades and a general cleanup and also removed debris in the center bearing that may have been preventing proper grease flow. All in all a messy afternoon. It required my breaker bars, impact wrench torque to 80 ft lbs with torque wrench on the spindle bolts. The blades were in good shape and despite considerable use the deck is in excellent condition /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif---thank goodness. JI may have to replace that center spindle bearing at some point -but not now.
Time to mow. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif with coffee in hand. Oh, it really is that shiney. It was a bit dirty so I detailed it. A clean machine is a happy machine plus there was a bout 50 lbs of seed in the radiator that had to be removed--yuk--from cutting the back acerage of broam. J

How do you keep the paint on everything?

All my kubota stuff is usually shinny bare metal.

To confirm, the grease eventually came out of the bottom of the spindle, but only after you had a huge mess of grease on top?

I ask because I picked up a new deck for my garden tractor. Before installing it, even though it was new, I greased the spindles. The only spindle that had grease come out of the bottom was the center one. Factory grease came out. No grease came out of the bottom of the two outer spindles. I called the dealer and he said the spindles are usually 'over greased' from the facory and there was nothing to worry about. I wonder... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Yes Mike, it was only after much grease had been pumped out on top that any grease made it's way into the lower bearing area. I go home very soon where I will do maintenece on the BX while there. I will see if the same condition exists there as well--I do not think it does. J

Is there any other way to resolve this 'problem' and get grease to the lower bearing area? I checked the 'weep' holes on the bottom of the spindle and they're clear. I can't see what's blocking the grease from getting there.

If not, this will mean taking the deck belt off, wasting a lot of grease, cleaning it up reinstalling the belt, reinstalling the deck, starting the deck and see the rest of the grease spin out from under the pullies, then cleaining the deck again. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My concern is that if [bb]I[/b] can't get grease to the lower part of the spindle, how did the factory manage to 'overgrease' the spindle (as the dealer claimed).

Maybe the dealer meant that he stood over the mower while he greased the spindles! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
