6000 lbs 0n 7000lbs trailer?

This is interesting, because I would expect strict strict rules and enforcement here in the Peoples Socialist Republik of Kalifornia.

They do not want pickup size trucks at the scales here. Signs post that before every scale.

I got pulled over once for 65mph in a 65mph zone while trailering my Kubota. Well, in Calif, max tow speed limit is 55mph... CHP showed absolutely no interest in the load. Didn't look at my chains/binders or anything. Was only interested in my speed.

I am one though, that has plenty of trailer for the tractor, chains/binders on each corner ect. My Kubota is pretty light weight.
He may have seen all the chains and such while pulling you over. ;)

Correctomudo. Here in CA the CHP doesn't want pickups running through their scales. And the definition of a pickup:

1) a motor truck with GVWR less that 11,500 lb (so most 1Ts qualify)
2) has an unladen weight of less than 8001 lb (most 1Ts qualify, I think)
3) equipped with an open box bed not exceeding 9 ft in length.

So a 2009 F-350 CC Diesel DRW 4X4 fails #1 & 2.

I would say yes FLA DON. They have a 13,000# GVWR and would weigh right at or maybe just a smidge below 8,000# since my Short Bed F-350 Extended Cab 4x4 Diesel weighs 7,600# with me in it a 3/4 tank of fuel.

Ford's data say 8003lbs. So now if said truck pulls into a weigh station in CA, they could say they don't meet the requirement to be called a PU. And if they bypass and get stopped, say, my bed is under 9'.

yea yea -- here in NYS, it can seem confusing. DOT don't care, state troopers are NOT the best trained specailists unless the vehicle they are driving says trucks on it. you could have a half a brained state trooper checking the tags registration while you are driving by and if the registration shows enough laden weight, they not gonna bother to pull you over. If you don't and you are towing lets say a backhoe on a landscape trailer and taillight is out, they gonna use the low allowed laden weight as excuse to pull you over and rack up the tickets on you! So in the judge eyes paperwork wise it looks legal, but will go by the DOT book if needed. sucks don't it ?:(

Don't do it. The tractor plus the weight of the trailer will far exceed the trailers rating. Be safe.

Is this move a one time deal?

If so, what would it cost to have it hired out? I bet it is cheaper than the potential headache.

As is the case with so many other things: I'm sure what you're proposing will work fine. There is not 100% certainty of loss of life, limb, or property.

BUT!!!

If something DOES go wrong, the inconvenience/damage will FAR exceed any cost or inconvenience that would have been required to do it right the first time.

This is typically my litmus test for making such decisions.

A story:

My brother asks me yesterday if I've ever felled a tree (10" to 14" on my property) by hooking up come-a-longs and straps, putting tension on it, and digging the backside of the tree with my backhoe. This to save the ~$150 I would pay my tree-guy to put a tree on the ground. Mind you, this is only trees that are in an "at risk" location...near the house or other trees I want to save...

Putting myself, my tractor, my backhoe, my house, whatever other trees, etc., at risk to save $150? No, thank you. If I was saving $12,000, I'd think about it.

I'd apply similar rationale to your decision. However, I think in either case, you'd be creeping up on, or exceeding, your towing capacity very quickly.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned(I just skimmed through the replies), but in NC you do not need weighted tags for a SUV. I'm not sure what the rules are if you are truly running commercial, but you are good to go on the tag aspect.

Hope your right on that. Have the chains and binders. I installed a brake controller last week($55.00 from Advanced) works great. Probably going to pick up tractor in about a week. Will take the back roads and take it slow and easy. Tractor is said to be 75" wide, the trailer is 79" wide. Hope It fits:) Other than having expired tags on the trailer (My Bad ) I am good to go. But don't shoot me over that. Never had tags on any trailer I have ever owned, didn't like paying the high county property taxes that come along with the tags every year. Never had a problem with it. Pulled boats for 25 years, never had a cop stop me for expired tags. If I get a ticket now I guess I am due one.:(
