6200 miles on Shell Rotella T 5w/40 oil

I put Rotella 15W40 in my new used Kubota M5400 and it didn't like it. No surprise since Kubota doesn't recommend 15W40 oil but it was the only thing I could find. Last month I found some Rotella synthetic 5W40 and now my tractor sounds a whole, whole lot better, starts better and sounds smoother when warmed up too. I'm sold on it.

Dan---Sorry this is late, been busy with my R/c heli for a few weeks.

But here is what I think but don’t forget I am no chemical engineer only a mechanical. Since I had a Powertroke for some years and had oil tests done each year this is what I think.

Keep an eye on your Iron, It is not high but I would rather see it around 5 to 8 ppm. I also do not know the miles on the engine.

#2 Silicon could be a tad lower but maybe a dirty air filter. Again nothing to worry about but I would just double check the filter.

#3 The Calcium looks very good but the Mg looks WAY to low. I would have expected to see it around 300 ppm but something is up.

#4 Phosphorus is low but I think the limit for an API approved oil is like 1100 or 1200 ppm.

#5 what is the OXD, viscosity and NOX level? This is good to know how the oil is holding up. I would assume (which is bad) that they would be low due to the high TBN but again I do not like to assume.

#6 it looks to me like this is almost the same #’s as Delo oil.

#7 is there any Fuel in the oil? Due to just ideling the engine? How about Soot/Soliids?

It looks pretty good and I would go longer but that is me.

I have been using 15w-40 100 synethetic since 1996 without any problems in all my diesel toys.

Up until about 1-year ago all diesel people said to use 15w-40...weird.

I switched to 5w30 Mobil 1 (from 5w30 dino oil) on my Tacoma. My numbers reveal that I need about 3% mileage increase when going from 3k mile changes to 5k. Pretty sure I'm getting it, and more. Will monitor for the next 4k miles. If the oil still looks good at 5k, I'll go on to 6k.

How much does it cost to have an oil sample analysis done?

depends on what you are looking for? Some charge extra for NOx, TBN, OXD, fuel etc. By on a scale it would be from 14 to $25

I use oil guard. The last kits I purchased were $9/ea when purchased in lots of 3 or more. Turnaround time is less than a week.
