How many of you guy's wish that you had bought a 97 F350 reg cab 4x4 PSD........ and just left it in a garage for the past 16 years? I think that is/was the end of the "classic" p.u. styling, and the best looking Ford ever. Imagine what that would be worth now or in another 10 years or so?

Mostly because I like the looks of steel lines but also for streamlined flow and less chance of leaks. Intake air heater is a useless airflow interrupter for me and something that could cause a problem. Fuel bowl/heater I never really liked it's location and likes to leak. I will have better filtration under the truck with the spin ons. The EBPV is doing the classic rod oil leak so it's flying to the dumpster along with it's EBPV exhaust choking butterfly. My non EBPV turbo pedestal should be here soon. I'm mostly cleaning up engine bay, improve reliability, de-fording an international engine lol.

Interesting this thread happened to come up now. my son is trying to help a friend get their 1988 F250 Lariat (6.9 or 7.3 ) diesel up and running for hunting season.
it has been sitting for a few months and has a charging problem, also pulls the batteries down when parked, looks like the alternator has been changed. son says it is hard starting , but after looking it only has one battery, and i see it will need to add the second one , and will charge and load test the other. soo..

1 i will get a new battery or two, and remove the alternator and have it tested..
2 Now for the hard starting, if the engine has good cranking speed do these engines normally start easily or do they need working glow plugs even in warm weather- will check them and power transfer from glow plug controller on start cycle

We just brought it home ( on a trailer being towed by the 03 Dodge Cummins)
-making up for the Dodge being brought back home on a roll back powered by one of these 7.3s of newer vintage
when my Dodge stranded us in February- in 25 degree weather with no coats (water pump puked) so I certainly can't knock these 7.3s

Just wondering if anyone has any tips- if there are any common problem areas that relate to the hard starting and or charging and battery draining on this vintage of Ford If I don't get it up and running quickly I will start another thread
Thanks everybody

Try posting on Diesel Stop. There's forums there for several Ford diesels and lots of helpful guys there. I've received lots of valuable advice there the last couple of years.

Check the return lines and injectors. Mine would leak causing long cranks to purge air and start. They make kits that include new lines, o rings, and copper washers.

Dan, the '88 will be a 7.3.

You need two batteries, and I always replace them as a pair.
Unless the ambient temperature is really warm, (like 80-90 degrees) these engines need a working glow plug system. You can get the plugs and controller (if needed) at the Navistar/International truck dealer. It's cheaper than the same parts from Ford.
Like Buck said, check the fuel return lines. Any visible fuel leak needs to be fixed.

For me it would be a 03 F350 SRW 7.3 4x4. To me thats the holy grail of F Series.

Seems to me I remember wiring harnesses and relays associated to injectors and glow plugs along with the glow plug timer.
