Re: 72\" MMM or small rider

Save a grand and still get a Deere with a 54" deck.
I am no riding lawn mower expert, but I truly don't understand spending up to over 3x this amount on on those fancy X series.
I own a lowly 100 series and beat the living crap out of it. I mean literally. And it purrs like the day I bought it, is comfortable, and will cut pretty tall grass at full tilt boogey. What more do you need? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

True, I don't know his margins, so I can't say that with any certainty. I was just figuring the labor charges involved with outfitting your tractor with the pto kit as some extra margin for the dealer.

You definitely don't want to be putting on and taking off that big mower deck more than once a year. I wrestle with a 60" deck and it's all I care to handle. I definitely avoid removal and installation when I can.

If your situation allows you to "get by" with a 100 series, then I can see where you're coming from. However, plenty of folks out there either want their tractors to do more than cut grass (like tilling for a garden, FEL work, etc.) or are forced to cut grass in more demanding conditions, like steep slopes which require at least differential lock if not 4wd. In their cases the X-series machines are just the ticket.

I realize that there likely are plenty of folks out there with more money than brains riding X595s around on their board flat 1/2 acre lots. But, it's their nickel and they can spend it however (stupidly) they wish.

Re: 72\" MMM or small rider

I would just like to say a mid mount on the tractor will cut as good as the garden tractor. Your 4510 would probably be equipped with a 72" 7-iron deck which cut really, really nice. I had a 60" on my 4300 and it cut supurb although it was a little on the small side. It cut better than our garden tractors with the normal 48" decks. Even the normal 72" JD decks cut well like on the 70 series. One just can't mow around low hanging branches well so a push mower or garden tractor will be necessary to finish.

Re: 72\" MMM or small rider

You can go out right now and purchase a 72" rear mount mower for $1700, Landpride and cut the grass just fine. I would, however be concern with compaction/ruts in the ground and would be more likely to purchase a different unit.

Re: 72\" MMM or small rider

The cutting around objects wont be a problem. Its gonna be a new lawn. So depending on what i use for a mower will dictate the actuall finished area. If I cant cut it with what I have, it wont be grass.
All the stone walls will have 12" of mulch in front of them. There will be no sharp corners. I have one tree island in the front of the house. I may end up with mulch all the way to the stone wall so I dont have to go around that eithor.
I dont know if its ever gonna dry out up here. Once it stops raining, I need to address the wash outs on my leach field. Of course this makes a good argument for a canopy for the tractor. I could be out there now instead of in here watching the sand wash away.
