New to the TBN and new to the search for a tractor. I have been looking around this site for a coulple weeks and have not found the answers to what I would like answered. My needs are ripping out brush, stumps and small trees that has overtaken the shorline on my 10 acres in Northern Michigan. The land is 98 % woods, mostly hardwood trees with the junk trees near the shoreline. I will also have other needs later, but for now this is what I need. My question is what unit would be best. I have been mostly looking at the B7510 ($13,000k) and B7610 ($14,100) w/fel. Why? Well, I think the ground clearance on the BX series could be an issue. That is the out the door price including the 6% Michigan sales tax. I have been told by two dealers that for what I am doing I don't neccessarily need a bh. Will these units w/fel fit my needs and are these good prices for each unit?

Thanks fellas!

Well I just posted a simialr thread asking for advise. I just purchased a 7610 with a 352 loader for 13,700. Based on what you said and what Ive read Im sure I wouldnt by a BX. I heard that they are tough lil tractors but ground clearence is a problem. I like the features that the 7510 and the 7610 have. I think it all comes down to how much money one wants to spend. I really didnt want to spend over 12,000 but made my cutt off AT 14,000. I now that someday I will swear and wish I would have bought bigger but unless your loaded get the biggest you can for your budget.

Good luck

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that the lift capacity between the BX and the 7610 is pretty big ...that is what really changed my mind for the 7610 with the352 loader. I also plan on purchasing the add on tooth bar for the bucket.

What do you think about a bh? Is that neccessary for what I will be doing? Dealer claimed I would add another 6k to the price.

Northshore44 -

Well for popping out small trees and shrubs - you want to make sure you get a toothbar for your loader bucket at the least.

The problem using a FEL alone for shrub / small tree removal is space: for example - if you have two shrubs that you want to keep - but another you want to remove between the two - then you may not have enough room to go straight in with the bucket. Then you have to start getting inventive: for example wrapping chain around the base of the shrub and trying to tear it out that way....

Some questions:

1) How much shoreline do you have to clean up / how much area are you looking to clear?

2) How big are the trees (diameter in inches) that you want to take out?

3) What is your timeline to accomplish the clearing?

*********************

#2 is a critical question - because if you have bigger trees - bigger than @ 6" diameter would be my starting guess - pulling their stumps out with a FEL alone is going to get increasingly difficult / frustrating...

1 and 3 kind of go hand-in-hand: assuming the tree size (#2) is not an issue - many of the TBNers here like to accrue as much "seat time" as daylight permits (myself - I appreciate that my CUT lets me finish chores faster - leaving more time for other - *non-tractor* ( gasp! ) - projects...) - but if on the other hand - you need to clear this area ASAP (ex house lot prep) - then I'm thinking you'll probably want to rent something with a BH (possibly even a small excavator) and still get the B7510 / B7610 for your general property / landscaping needs.

Once cleared - I don't think the B7510 / B7610 will have a problem dealing with upkeep - the issue is really "picking the right tool for the job" - and is the "job" (ie clearing) a "one time" event (>> BH rental) or an "ongoing property upkeep" (>> BH purchase)....

If you could put some numbers on your needs - that will help us picture the "scale" of your project - and we can provide more precise answers.

Cheers,

Dan

DanR67,

Great advise and nice web page!

I have about 1000' of shoreline some of it is really thick. The reason I was thinking about a BH is; some of this brush has migrated past the shore and a bit into lake. That means I may need a BH to "reach" out and pull some of that stuff from solid ground. I am not sure how the tractor will do inside the lake even though near the shore is about 2 feet deep at most.

The tree diameter varies... some 1", some 2", some 3" to 4". I guess I am more concerned about this scrub brush that has taken over 3' to 4' of the entire shoreline.

Dan... I have no time table for accomplishing this. It will be done in between the time I am contructing the cabin.

Also... my property is soooo far away from civilization (21 miles from a paved road) that renting a piece of machinery and then getting to my site would be quite a distance.

thanxs!:)

I think Dan's advice and concerns about pulling stumps with a FEL is right on. To go even further I don't think a large number of stump pulls with a BH is going to be an easy task either.

You might be better off finding someone with a dozer to come in for a few days, bump out the stumps and then go in with the tractor and do the clean up. It isn't always easy to find one and knowing you are some where out there in God's Country it might be a bit harder. I found my guy at the local dump! Check with the locals I am sure there is someone that has the equipment.

We have a place in up-state New York and the hill side was to much of a grade for me to challenge with my B-7500 so I had a guy come in with his dozer and he was done in about four hours. I expect it would have taken me three weeks to accomplish most of what he did.

Just boys and their toys, but sometimes big does matter. 1000 feet of shoreline, gosh I only have 300 feet and it is more than enough for me to have to take care of! Our place is a 5 1/2 hour ride and we are only ten miles away from the nearest town. It is a work in progress and our hope is to make it our summer place in a few more years.

If you can afford it I recommend getting the bh. Not only will it definitely help you with this immediate project at hand but you will always have it for other things that come up.

I bought one with my JD 4710 and have found it to be indispensable. I had all kinds of small jobs that needed a bh to do them but weren't big enough to justify someone hauling a piece of equipment in to do them. Renting is a PITA if you ask me. And I don't know about your area but it takes a small miracle to get an excavation contractor to actually show up to do a job.

I figure I paid for the cost of the bh in the first few months by being able to get the things done that I wanted done without all the aggrevation of trying to get someone here to do it. Besides, the machine time is the same as therapy to me. If I have a really bad day at work I just come home and start digging. All my worries are soon gone.:D

Hiring someone with a dozer or renting another type of rig would be taking some of the fun away even though it may take me a bit longer. I am not against buying used with both implements.
