We're looking into a JD 790 4x4 to use to prepare some wildlife food plots on our property. We've got about 4 acres to plant with the biggest field being just over 1 acre and all others coming in at under 1/3 of an acre.

I'm wondering, what size disks would the 790 be able to handle? I've been told it could handle a 4 or 5 foot bushhog and the seed spreader, but I want to make sure it can handle a set of disks before we dive into this. I'm really new to the whole tractor game so consider this research. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Thanks for the help.

My guess is a 4' dual ganged disc.. possibly one of the angle iron frames.. vs the heavy duty ones. Hit a TSC store and take a look.. they have ones similar to what I'm talking about.

Ah, I know just the ones you're talking about. I just wasn't sure they would work. Thanks.

I pull a old set with my 790 with no trouble it's about 6 ft wide has eight disk and I'm not sure about the weight ...I would say very heavy.... it was an old set that pulled behind a tractor....say about 1940 or so it pulls it really good and it really cuts the ground good ....you know the price was right /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I pull an old ca 1960? JD disk that is on rubber w/ a cylinder to raise and lower, w/ my 790 4wd. My garden is heavy clay and it works it good and deep. I think the disk is 8' wide which is probably more than I would buy for it, but I inherited the disk from an Uncle. I also have a 8' JD field cultivator I picked up for around $300 and it handles that. I bought a 1 bottom plow for plowing manure under and it works fair. I love the 790 for whatever task. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Is there an advantage in using a disk over a tiller?

A disc is usually WAY cheaper. I've got about $125 into a JD 10' pull type KBA. It does a good job but nothing like a tiller would do.

I have used my tiller instead of discing... But only when I really needed things turned over good.

For general keeping weeds down etc the disc is fine, moves faster, and I'm not wearing out nearly as expensive a piece of equipment.

When i'm preparing the garden / or turning it under the tiller is the obvious choice.

Heck, around here the farmers plow, then smooth with a disk. If you've got pasture, and run over it with a disk are you telling me that that will remove the grass and smooth the dirt?

I have five acres of pasture that I just bought that was plowed and NOT disked five years ago and it is rather rough terrain now. I want to smooth it out, so I was going to plow it, then disk it.

I have a tiller, but I am afraid it will take too long. Tillers are great but you need several passes if you have grasses growing!

I have a KingKutter 18-20-C from TSC.
That's 20 disks, (2 gangs of 10) each 18 inches in diameter.
It's about 78 inches wide and weights about 560 pounds.
My 790 didn't have any trouble pulling it. Even after I added 8 cement blocks.
