It's very safe for me - it's not for my tractor /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Seriously - The thread discussing this mod seemed to cover the safety aspect - and not to over do the increase. Beyond that I haven't heard of any failures associated with it.

I started w/2 packs of shims. The lift capacity was great, but when I hooked it up to a pressure guage, I was scared I might hurt something, so I took one package out. This left me with 2500 PSI and a modest increase in lift capacity. Just make sure you never try to lift something (with a chain or otherwise) from the corner of the bucket. This could bend something. Always lift from the middle. I've had no trouble with mine and am happy I "Tim Taylored" it.

Thanks Mark for all the work and research you did on this mod - I'll pass on to the group how he does with this.

Just a suggestion, I would buy two packs of shims. They are very cheap. Unhook one of the hydraulic lines of your loader and keep adding shims until you reach about 2500 PSI (factory setting is 2050). You should be OK if you don't exceed this pressure. Just don't let JD know or it could void your warranty.

Just some words of wisdom. I have a 790 which I use commercially and the dealer increased the pressure due to a lot of complaining about how gutless the machine was.
They raised it to 2800-2900 psi. the first thing that happened I bent the rams on the backhoe.
The dealer covered the dammage and set it to 2300psi were it has beeb ever sense after a year of use about 300hrs the FEL rams are starting to leak and I have replaced every hose on the FEL

Raising the lift capacity of the system from 2050 PSI to over 2500 PSI or even 2800 PSI. I would not worry as much about the cylinders and pump as much as the loader. That is where a great deal of the stress is. The 70 series is a very light loader and I suspect the margin of overkill in its frame is modest at best. The pivot pins are very small on the series 70 loader. I think your pushing it.

I've got a #60 loader on my 670. But for those of you 790 owners, what is the lifting capacity at the lowest height(s) on your #70 or 419 loader? What is the breakout force?

Roy, I recently had a good chance to measure my lifting capacity. I was uloading 40 pound bags of concrete from my trailer and using the FEL to move them to where I was using them. I loaded 20 bags and tried to see if the loader would lift it, it did with no problem.

Now in hindsight I wish I had tried loading more bags to see what the actual capacity of my loader is, and I also wish I had tried to see how high I could lift the 20 bags.

But anyway, in partial answer to your question I know my loader will at least lift 800 pounds 2 to 4 feet off the ground.

With respect to breakout force, I have not done much digging and don't really have a subjective or independent method of verifying what the 419 is capable of.

Thanks

Hey all, I bought two packs of shims for my #70 loader and 790. So far, I have installed 1 pack and have noticed a sizeable difference in operational lifting of heavy weights. The tractor can now raise it self off the ground at idle just using the boom arms and not curling the bucket. My question is this:

For each shim added, how much does it boost the pressure before the bypass valve kicks in? I haven't added any of the second pack yet. I asked my dealer about bringing the tractor in and hooking it up to a pressure guage. He agreed to do it. (my tractor is out of warranty). I asked him about how much each shim boosted the pressure and he did not know, but said he would look it up to see if he could find any info. If I find out from him, I will post it here for all to reference.

Now, I want forks for my #70 bucket. I am gettign tired of off loading my truck 1 bag at a time to get to the pallet, put the pallet on the ground in my barn, and then re-stacking all of the bags of: seed, fertilizer, de-icer, landscape rocks and meterials, etc. It would be great for picking up logs, too without getting off the tractor, hooking up a strap, picking up the log, setting it down, unhooking the strap........you get the picture.

There is no standard answer to your question. All of the shims are different sizes. Don't add the second pack until after you test the pressure. You probably don't want to go over 2500 PSI. You might bend something if you do. When hoisting things with the bucket, always do so from the center of the bucket or you will bend something with that extra power.

Mark,

When you measured the pressure, was it at idle ?

I did not add the shims yet and my pressure measures 2000 at idle (it's a 3500 psi gauge).
If I measure at full throttle the gauge measure ~2250 at first and then slowly settles to 2100 (still at full throttle). Is this normal ?

Also, it seems there's not much room to take the 1" cap off. Did you have to remove the seat first ?
