8 Hours Seat time this weekend - BS & RC

I'm 61. I grew up on a farm. By age 9 I was expected to plow, bale hay, ect, just like a grown-up. I farmed myself for 37 years. After I "retired" from farming, we started a mowing business. Long story short, I've spent THOUSANDS of hours on a tractor.

And I STILL enjoy MOST of the seat time I get.

Some people don't understand. I don't try to explain it to them any longer. I just go climb on the tractor and enter my own little world.

I am with you on enjoying the seat time. I am 42 started plowing in the fall of 78 by myself for the 1st time. I was 12 at the time and there was no place I would rather be still today then on a tractor except maybe a combine. It doesn't matter if it is a big farm tractor or just a little riding lawn mower I enjoy it most of the time. It seems as though I can solve most problems out when I am on the tractor.

I cut almost 22 acres this weekend. While I can't say that it was great fun I can say it beat paying someone to do it.

I'm up to 16 hours on the new 7800. I love this thing. I started Sat by using the Box Scraper on the driveway. We have a long stone drive with a big hump in the middle, tire ruts up the sides - not anymore.
Newbie lessons learned:
1. add weight to the BS

All day Sun with the 60" hog opening a long path that runs by the river. Holy crap - I can't believe that some of you lucky Joe's get paid to do this - Bush hogging has got to be the most fun you can have on a tractor (wife won't get on it).
Newbie lessons learned:
1. when you open the lower 2 points on your 3 point to attach a box scraper (turnbuckles), close them back up for the hog or it will swing a lot. The swinging will cause scalping, and if you are on an off-camber, scare the crap out of you when all 600lbs. of hog swings to the down hill side!!
2. There are holes in your meadow that you can not see - these will scare the crap out of you also
3. A Motorola IC580 will not survive being run over by a 7800
4. If the tractor can run it over - the hog will chew it up
5. When you go into the shed for the grease gun - the wasps that just built a nest there will chase and sting you
6. WD40 kills wasps if that's all you have
7. A 7800 will not fit in my garden shed with the ROPS up - loud noise - scared again
8. always have more fuel than you think, so you can bush hog more, because it so much fun.

I hope everyone else had productive weekends.

Unexpected Hills holes high and low places are always a risk of overturning a tractor especially on slopes or hills!

The lessons learned made me laugh. I love posts like this.

BTW, ORA, I'm also still in the "everything I do on the tractor is fun" phase. I hope it doesn't wear off too soon.

My fun hasn't worn off in forty-four years ... and I don't think it ever will!

I'm just getting so old ... I spend more time at the doctor than on the tractor!! (I wonder if I could be buried with my tractor?!)

offroadaudio,
I had the perfect job for you, for 11 years I worked for a state highway dept and we got on the mowers in May and off in November. I mowed all summer long with a 15ft batwing, interstates and two lanes. I got promoted to a supervisor so I don't get to mow anymore but I love to get on my 3830 Kubota at home and mow around my property, it still is relaxing and at home I don't have to worry about cars hitting me! Have fun and be safe, keep your head in the game at all times. Keep working on the wife to ride on the tractor with you, who knows what might happen!

I started driving tractor to pick up small round bales when I was 8 or 9 plowed When I was 10. Aways ejoyed it. Farmed on my own till 1996 tryed a couple other things. Started Pasture care business 3Years ago. Found my nitch spraying drainage dithes for brush Keeps me busy most of the summer. Sometimes it gets boring but I wouldn' change anything. Out there by your self gives you a chance to put things in perspective.
