Will a hydraulic pump from a 671 Ford fit my 861 diesel? It looks to be identical to mine, but pictures can be deceiving.

yup.. all the cylindrical pumps from 55-64 swap.

Well, I missed the deal on the used pump but began looking into rebuilding mine. The shaft broke but the gear appears reusable, but I'll need to find the forked piece that screws into the shaft that drives the tach cable 9-1-14_pump.jpg

With any luck (been missing that) I'll have the engine on a stand in a few days.

I know both the hydraulic pump gear shaft broke and the hydraulic drive gear on the rear of the camshaft stripped gears and came off the camshaft. I've replaced the pump gear and shaft. I'm in the process of cleaning head, lapping valves and cleaning valve train parts. I had a slight setback when my r/f tire suddenly went flat before I pulled the axle, but I have installed a new tube and used the old tube to cut-up into a wheel liner before I put it back together to prevent wheel rust flakes from puncturing this new tube again. I still need to pull axle/engine and check out the cam & failed drive gear. What I don't for sure is what caused the pump shaft and cam hydraulic gear failure to begin with. Luckily for me my procrastination can also be linked to being volunteered to do grandson chauffeur and baby-sitting duties each afternoon, which has thrown a wrench into my best laid mice plans. Took the valves out of the head today after cleaning the old gasket material from the bottom. I must have chiseled 3 shot glasses of carbon from #1 exhaust port; some chunks the size of marbles and 3 more shot glasses full from the rest. It couldn't have been breathing too good. What would cause such an excessive carbon build-up? Or is it just 58 years of use?

58 ys of use on a non turbo diesel.. and it may have seen extended idling.

That's is funny, I bet a few people would be upset following that slow truck staring at that sign. Lol

I finished cleaning the head and valve today. I got the valves lapped and re-installed in the head. The head is not warped, but there is a nasty scratch on the surface I'm concerned about. I didn't make it and it didn't leak before, but should I do anything about it? Add gasket goop of some kind maybe? Resurface?

if there is plenty of gasket surface around it and it wasn't leaking i'd probably be willing to try some copper coat spray on tge gasket vs the scratch

I finally got the engine pulled. I noticed extreme wear on the heads of these 6 bolts around the clutch where (I think) the clutch thrust bearing engages the clutch. Should I replace these bolts? They also appear to be unevenly adjusted, some being held out further from the clutch than most of the other arms. Should they be even?

Wow that is a lot of wear. Is the throw out bearing seized?

   / 861 diesel problems #35
Ouch.

ye-ouch. for sure lots of wear.

is/was there any pedal freeplay?

Never having owned or drove a tractor with a 2 stage clutch, I'm not sure about too much free-play. However, it seemed to operate fine as I would have expected it to, but like I say, I got nothing to compare it to. About 3" down and I could shift gears, about 4-5" more inches down to the floorboard and the PTO disengaged. The thrust bearing seems to be fine and spins freely inside the race on the shaft. Are these six 1/4" bolts special or can I just replace them with any old bolt that fits? Grade 5 or 8? How do I measure them to see if the new bolts are installed/screwed in the correct distance?

how far could you press the clutch before you felt resistance.

The clutch was about 1/2 way in it's travel upward (upper 4" section of peddle travel) for the engagement of the drive gears as I remember to move forward or reverse, but I never paid much attention to the PTO engagement. Seems like the PTO was also about 1/2 way in it's arch when it engaged my mower when I was mowing with it. The drive clutch section (upper 4" travel) was noticeably lighter to push down than the mashing the full peddle to the floor to release the PTO, but resistance began at the very top of the peddle when first pressing the peddle. There was no noticeable free play when the clutch was all the way out.

no free play is what ground the bolt heads off, plan on replacing the TOB
