What is the best way to access the differential on a 48 8n. Does the tractor need to be split? I just want to inspect it for source of noises. Right side axel and outer bearing seem fine. Jon

Drain the fluid and open the round inspection plate on the right side. If you need to see more you can remove the seat and open the top containing the 3 pt. lifting mechanism. If you need to do this I'd suggest you get a repair manual as some care must be exercised in reassembly.

bum info. ;)

you can't see the diffy from the inspection cover or the hyd top cover except for a lil 2" hole.. :) might as well pull the pto shaft and look thru there.. ;)

pulling the left axle trumpet will let you remove the ring gear and chunk.

to remove the pinion you'd have to do a rear split.

is this just a inspection looksee.. or are you really feeling / hearing something..

here's a pic of an 8n diffy..

notice the casting seperates the ring gear area from the hyds section...

notice that the inspection covers are ahead of the ring gear compartment as well.

there is a small casting hole about an inch in diameter at the very top of that ring gear casting area that, if you removed the top cover that you could look down into and see a lil bit. if you were a crab and yer eyes were on stalks.. might be ok.. ditto witht he pto shaft hole... if you could stick yer eyes out on stalks and look in and up ya might see something. otherwise.. I'd pull left trumpet.. that way if you need to fix something.. you can remove chunk that side..

shop crane and laod leveler makes an easy way to lift the axle trumpet as an assembly with the axle and brakes and hub intact.. just pull the wheel and center, and then unbolt trumpet after supporting the casting... could have it off in 10-15 minutes if you work fast.. etc.. just a lil bit o linkage to disconnect..e tc..

Hey, 3 teeth broken on the ring gear, it must have been damaged some other time and then just let go as i wasn't stressing it at the time. Now to buy a parts tractor or locate the part used. Any sources? Jon

Thanks for you help that seems very reasonable as ford wants 800 for just the ring gear. I was able to score the assembly for slightly less on ebay. They made a lot of 8n's so it pays to search for a while not something you can do in spring but now is a good time to be patient. regards Jon

hope the parts you get off ebay are good.

for similar money I'd have bought mr smiths. his stuff is better than pictured, and comes with free advice if needed when installing.

good luck!

i agree i wouldn't wont to buy any parts off of ebay unless new because you never really know the condition until you get it and like i have seen (when my customers have decided to buy off ebay instead of from me to save a few dollars) the parts can be worse off than what you already have and nobody to bring it back to or talk to

yep.. I've recieved worse than I started with from ebay before..

Thanks for everyones help. Just need to muscle on the wheels and test her out. Ebay diffy looked good but still have the original less the ring gear if the spiders are an issue. Think I got the preload right, wish they still built stuff so easy to work on... Once you have a tractor you can't work without it. Thanks again. Jon

Now that everything seems OK I'll tell you all I paid $22.50 for the complete differential and pinion assembly. I think it was worth the gamble. See how long it lasts... thanks again
