I have a buddy who has a 8n with hydraulic problems, lift was working ok, hydraulic fluid was milky so he decided to change it, after changing it will not work at all, he replaced it with universal hydraulic fluid, what type fluid should be used, does it have to be primed, any info will be greatly appeciated,

Universal hydraulic fluid should work just fine.

Just covering the basics here, does he know that the PTO DOES need to be spinning for the hydraulics to work??

assuming he knows how to use the hyds, and as stated, pto must be spinning for hyds to work.. the next thing i would look at for a unit that had been working then stopped, and an oil change would be a sticky control valve... some grit may have been stirred up during the change and refill.

pull the round inspection cover with a dipstick in it that is aft of your right foot.. there will be a bar hanging down from the top cover that goes to a lil pivot that works the control valve in and out.. if that rod is not moving the control valve fully in and out, the lift will not function. you might try manually helping that rod move as you move the control lever.. keep yer hands out of the oil though as there is a spinning shaft in there.

if that's not it, post back.. other possibilities are a stuck open relief, etc..

Got by there today to look at his tractor, its not even a 8n, its a later model, not sure sure which one, it has a round hood emblem like a Jubilee, the emblem has Ford script on the top and shafts of wheat on the bottom, looks like the hydralic pump is mounted on the opposide of the motor from the starter, had my saturday clothes on and didn't want a hydraulic shower, will have to get back by there, I feel there is probaly air in the system, any additional advice appreciated,

ok, so he likely has a naa or hundred series..

assuming he put oil in the correct sump, and it is full, remove the plug on the front/top of the pump head and run engine over till oil bubbles out from there, next you can pull the plug on the 3x5 cover under the seat and do the same.. once you have oil there, oil is getting to the unlaoding valve.. if moving the 3pt control a few times up and down, with machine at high idle AFTER bleeding the system and getting oil at both those plugs, then there are a few possibilities that will require removal of the top cover.. like sticky unloading valve, blown open relief, etc. on a naa, could be back pressure valve/line gone..

if the rear axle has a nut.. it's a naa, if it is a dish, or a dish with 2 edges or a line thru the middle but no nut its a 00 or 01.. if a naa, you have to remove the acorn nut and back out the back pressure valve before you remove the top cover or it can be damaged.

post back

Thanks for the reply, I am going to get it tomorrow, looks like I may be the owner of this tractor, he's tired of fooling with it and is not mech. inclined at all, made me an offer I could not refuse, will post back when I get it home.

So...how much did you "steal" it for if ya dont mind my asking?

post back when ya get it and let us know what it is.

Hey he's the one that made the offer, I gave him $2800.00, old tractor runs goods, Oh and I got 2 really good 5' disk, a Covington planter with numerous sweeps, a brand new never used 150 lb hopper seed sower, a 5' Howse bush hog, a rough box blade and a 1 row cultivator, reckon I did alright.

I don't really need the Covington planter, reckon what would be a fair price to get for this, it must have 20 different sweeps and a wheel attachment for the back, it has some different plates also.

   / 8n hydraulics #11
Well....When I seen the 2800 I thought you got taken. Then I seen all the attachments and that changes everything. I think you did allright. If ya wanted, you could probabally sell ALL of the attachments and get your $2800 back. That is like getting the tractor for free:thumbsup:

check tractorhouse and other forsale sites for an idea on that planter.

Well....When I seen the 2800 I thought you got taken.

a 53-62 model naa / 00 /01 series for 2800$ doesn't constitute being taken.. while not a steal if it is a bisic 4 speed model.. it's still not bad.

ugly ones with a few issues can go as low as 1800.. but an average good runner that looks good will be mid 2k's$ even without all that equipment. as you said..that stuff makes the tractor free.. etc.

You are correct. I thought we were still talking an 8n. I forgot that he said it was not an 8n, rather a later NAA or 00-01 series:confused2: my bad.

Finally got it all home today, had to make a couple trips and a lot of loading and unloading, the back rim does have a nut on it, will try and bleed th hydralics in the a.m., the hydraulic pump has a allen wrench type plug on the top front and I am assumimg this where I need to start bleeding it, the eq I got with the tractor is in good cond, the 5' disc is a sealed bearing type, with a large screw adj to adjust the angle on the gangs, the back set of gangs will flip up on the forward set, the seed sower has never been used, fair 5' bush hog, exc 1 row cultivator and the Covington planter looks pretty good, it has 4 different sets of sweeps, and a beat up 6' box blade, think I will keep ther disk and sell the one I have now, also came with an older Dearborn 6' disk that needs a little tightning up, someone told me planter ought to be worth around 500.00, think I'll stick it on CL's tomorrow., will post when I get the lines bled, the old tractor runs good, doesn't look to special.

Bled the air at the pump and lift started working, a little jerky the first couple times and then smoothed out, still a little quiver when coming up, thanks for all the info, now what am I gonna do with it, already have a Kubota L2950/Fel and Ford 1910,

axle nut means naa then..

yep.. bleed from that plug.

hopefully it is a piston pump ( cylindrical ).. and not the old vane pump ( square. )

Not sure of the difference but I had an 8N before and the fluid was NOT UTF, but heavier. Was having problem with lift staying up and took it to dealer. I had been putting UTF in it for years and it's thinness finally got to the point it was causing problems. Dealer drained and refilled and it worked perfectly.

   / 8n hydraulics #19
8n and NAA are different beasts.

oem oil in an 8n was similar to a 90wt gl1 gear oil.

UTF is fine for the 8n, and for the naa.

if your lift in the 8n was worn out.. that's why the utf was having issues.. not the oil.. but the wear.

utf or aw hyd fluid ONLY in a NAA hyds sump.. NO GEAR OIL!!!! can make the pump cavitate..
