8n not running right. intermittent issue

I am thinking it is ignition related as most of you are advising. I have instructed dad to check out the switch and terminal block connections. Everything at the coil and beyond is good. Plug gap good. Points and gap good, etc.

No one added a inline filter. We can remove the inlet line off the carb and has great flow. There is no doubt there is some stuff floating around in the tank given its age. But I dont suspect that as we have good flow. AND, it dont matter if it is under load or at idle, it will act up. And even when acting up at idle, bad enough to kill the tractor, we can wait 5 minutes (more than enough time to get enough fuel to bowl even if partially blocked screen), and upon restart it act up just like when it died. and eventually it will smooth out and be fine for another 5 minutes or whatever.

Fuel flow for carbs in my experience is rarely a problem unless a pump is required to get it from point a to point b.
Is that the case?

You've had the timing light on it while running poorly, was the light flash obviously breaking down at the same time the engine was? Or was it steady while the engine went to garbage?
Have you checked the (or does the dis. have) the advance weights on the dis. shaft?
The lobes on the dis. cam?
The play of the bearing sleeves for the dis. shaft?
Dwell would help with those questions.

Not sure I have a meter that checks dwell.

And no I havent had a timing light on it when it goes to crap. But I may try that.

And no pump either. Strictly a gravity feed system. Not sure on the advance weights, but I think they are in the distributor itself. We can check them out too and make sure they arent hanging up

deffinately check spark first. it's easy.

you can bypass and hot wire directly to coil and run and see if that prevents the issue.

That is what I told him to do. Would rule out the switch and terminal block.

Not sure if he has had a chance to try that or check out the connections yet or not.

I don't doubt that.
I've just never had the dubious pleasure of putting hands on one.

I've just made a living working on 4 and 2 cycle engines for most of my life.
Another dubious pleasure.
