8n running a 6 foot hog

   / 8n running a 6 foot hog #21
I have a 52 8n that runs very well I bought a 6 foot bush hog to run behind it with a overriding clutch. I do about 4-5 acres of mostly just pasture grass twice a year. In the past it has spun it ok. My question is this am I ok with a 6 foot or do I need to go with something smaller. Thanks for the help It is the 3point setup and not the pull behind type
pasture not a problem but if you had to stop or slow to turn not having a live pto would be a bit of a pain. the overriding clutch should keep the Hog from pushing tractor forward when stopping, my dad had a 8N starting out in the tractor business in 65. then switched to a 801 gas with the military shift.the 8n's are a bear and hard to kill

Over running clutch on the pto is the only thing that comes to mind for me. If it works good why change? Parts availability on the old tractors is hard to beat.

Anything will handle a 6’ mower IF you can go slow enough. The lack of a live PTO precludes that with an 8N. I drove one for years as a kid, and owned one as an adult for ten years. Great little tractors.

I live in the Blue Ridge mountains, and I run a 4' bush hog.

I thank you for all the well thought out input
I think a 5-footer is a better fit for an 8N because you don't have live/independent PTO to slow the tractor and let it work on a tough patch. As you have read from others, you can certainly use a 6-footer, but if you mow thick, high, lush grasses you will have to raise your cutter or mow half sections at a time to keep from bogging it down. I cut 7 acres of fairly flat pasture and when I used my '52 8N I used a 5-foot rotary cutter. When I got my 3000 my old 5-foot Covington Cutter's deck was rotting out fast so I got a Land Pride 6-footer but I never tried to use it with my 8N since I had more power (42hp vs 23) and live PTO in my 3000.

I've learned a lot in the last few years. Here are a few pics that I currently have:
And…you have a B model Mack 👏 I have a desire to get a B61ST and build a retromod using a 6.7 Cummins and aisin tranny. The modern parts are easy. Liked your truck video, it’s a good looking keeper and I am quite jealous 😂

Im in the "it works why change" camp.

You can always mow a 5' swath (except for the first pass) with a 6' mower if the conditions are heavy. But if conditions are light, you can never make a 5' mower take a 6' swath

5' doesn't solve all problems....
