If oil gets past the seals, silicone won't help much. There is a booger patch job on the single seal jobs that involves many tubes of silicon and some Teflon tape. Ultimately you are pumping the void between the axle and trumpet full of goop and using tef tape to keep it from adherring to the axle. When cured it acts like a huge redneck hack job seal. Lets hope you have a late one, and date codes checked?

As I said before, I don't know what year. The seal assy has a felt seal and a conventional rubber seal incorporated into a sheet metal holder. It looks like the axle housing has a machined area behind the bearing that could hold a seal, but there wasn't one there on either side. If there is supposed to be one there, what would the p/n be?

does your axle have the 2 spots for the seal. ie the inner one?

IE. the axle is what will determine if you can use 2 seals. ( well the trumpet determines it. but if the axle was not machined for a 2nd sel.. it would be useless.

I don't see an area on the axle that would take a seal on the differential side. However the new seal kits I got in are a great improvement over the old ones. New ones have a double lip seal in the carrier, where the old ones had a single lip and a felt seal. This looks a whole lot better. I think everybody that ever worked on this old girl, slapped on another coat of paint. Must be at least 5 layers, and nothing prepped in between, right over the dirt, grease etc. Everything that comes off is getting abrasive blasted and a coat of paint. Would like to sandblast the whole tractor, but I'm a little leery of forcing sand in where it doesn't belong. What' the best way to get the old paint off? Is sandblasting really detrimental?

Cool deal!

IMO I would not sand blast unless you are planning to dismantle everything and clean out. Strip paint and wirebrush. What ever paint I can't get off has earned the right to stay. Mine are all working tractors and if bought to a show are displayed as such.

Still blasting parts, trying to get the brakes back together. Cleaned up the ratchets for the parking brake, but I don't see how this is supposed to work. Surely they don't lock each time you apply the brakes? How do you apply parking brake?

Mine has a lever with teeth that will engage with the teeth on the break pedal lever. It is offset from its center of gravity so that it falls out of the way and when you want to engage the parking break you reach down behind your heal of your foot to engage the teeth. I can't remember whether it's on right or left side.

It's one of those things that's easier done than said.

And when you want to release it you just step hard on the break and then off the break and it will swing free again.
