This morning for about 10 minutes, the site was down while we had the RAM upgraded...

With the number of people we have online accessing, we were dipping into the swap and seeing some slow-downs at peak times... So far we've seen an improvement.

Thanks Muhammad for all your hard work. Guess I picked the perfect time to run to the store and I never noticed a thing. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I thought something funny was going on. Things were moving slower than normal - but then I just figured my computer was adopting my typical characteristics! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I had noticed some slowdowns a couple of times recently but sure didn't expect you to go out right away and fix the problem.

Just curious, what type of computer is all this wonderful stuff running on. It works amazingly well.

Now, when the cable/telephone company goes down... they credit your account... does this mean we can go on TBN an extra 10 more minutes this month...? /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif

The main site and forum is running RedHat Linux 6.2... 750mhz, 512MB RAM, UW SCSI hard drive... we've had this server for about a year... sitting on 2 OC-12, 5 OC-3, and 4 DS-3 connections so bandwidth isn't going to be a problem. Forum uses a mySQL db. Classifieds are running on MS SQL 2000 server, on a second box.

Wow! I'd hate to see your monthly network bill /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif!!

Who are your carrier(s)?

They are through a few carriers for reliability... UU Net, Sprint, I think one or two others. I'd have to look it up.

DaveNH posted some neat info a while back...

4 OC-3 makes an OC-12
4 OC-12 makes an OC-48 (2.5G)
4 OC-48 makes a 10G
80 OC-48 makes a 400G
320 OC-48 makes a 1.6T

To put this in perspective, just one OC-3 costs about $19,000/month, IIRC. The line charges would be about $250,000/month for what I mentioned...

That of course, is just one of the many reasons why we use managed hosting and don't do it in-house. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
