I picked up a used 9' cultipacker pull type, going to convert and refurbish to a 7' 3 point, the axle measures 1 3/4, the whole in the wheels 2 3/8, the axle has worn spots on it, couple of the wheels are broke, some have cracks, not sure if I could weld them, sound like cast iron?
I was thinking of sliding a pipe over the axle ( hopefully I can find the right size ) to better fix the wheels.

do they sell bearings for 1 3/4 axle, have only seen up to 1 5/8.

any ideas thoughts before I jump into my second build? thanks

anyone have any ideas, maybe if i assembled them on the axle and filled with concrete, that would secure them in place and add weight?

Shmizer, I'm not sure of the spelling, but their rings are made to float on the axle by a couple of inches. The wheels float on the axle and just kinda rattle around to bust up the clods. I would run the thing for a while till the axle looks like it's gonna break. bjr

I have one like that too, some of my wheels were broken so I removed them and used muffler clamps on the shaft to tighten the rest of the wheels up, I use mine after seeding. It does a good job of providing good seed-soil contact.

when you say you used muffler clamp how exactly ?

After removing the broken wheels, you can slide the rest of the wheels together and attach a muffler clamp to the shaft...this will keep the wheels together and prevent them from moving sideways on the shaft, thats what I did to mine and it has been working fine.....I have had to replace the muffler clamp a couple of times....but they are cheap....I used a 1 3/4" muffler clamp....you may have to use a big washer along with the muffler clamp if your wheels opening wants to ride up onto or over the muffler clamp...........Mike

You didn't say to OD of the wheel. Agri-Supply has some that look like a sprocket I think are 9" OD. bjr

How big a tractor do you have, 7 foot with concrete added, that is going to be some heavy 3pt implement! They kida were degined to work, if you need more weight, there must be some other problem? The weight might cause other problems.

The wheels are supposed to be able to move up and down a bit, not be solid on the axle, so I'd be concerned about slipping a pipe in there. Might make it worse of a machine, instead of better?

You didn't show a pic of the end-caps, many had wood blocks, if it has a strange old style of cage bearing you might not find a replacement. Good welding shop can make an impregnated brass bearing for you that will hold up for your lifetime to fit in the cage holder.

One design tweek you could put some of those hammer spacers from Agrisupply in between the smooth Vee's you have. As long as the hammer discs can move around too (bigger hole than your axle) they will pound on the clods too, many packers have alternating Vee and thin disc wheels. That could take up the room you have extra and keep the 10 foot pull type setup.

The problem with a 3pt is that it won't flex up & down as well - these things are designed to really move around, up down back forth and shatter the clods. The more you constrain it and the narrower you make it, the less effective it will be at doing what it should do.

Mind you, the 7 foot 3pt will work! Just, might be a bit less than the pull type 10 foot.....
