Have you checked the compression. I have seen a couple of these where the valve clearances weren't to spec and they would run with little power and cough backfire etc...

Good luck

The plot thickens gentlemen....first, thanks for all of the advice, truley appreciated. I installed the new set of points and the condenser, set the gap to .020 (was a bit concerned about the lack of clearence between the cam and the point end) and was about to reinstall the flywheel when I noticed one of the magnets was loose and butted up to the adjacent magnet-any recommendations on adhesive? I believe this may be the cause of my troubles and am wondering just why the **** I didnt check that sooner-Rick

Are you certain that this is the correct flywheel? Is this an electric start capable engine because the flywheel has teeth to accommodate elect start. If you do have elect start, then you most likely also have a charging stator underneath the flywheel and those magnets may used for generating current rather than providing ignition. Normally, you can re-attach the magnets with any properly applied epoxy.

Yeh that reminds me of also finding a loose magnet way back years ago.
the original spot has probably still got some epoxy on it.I just got some 2 part epoxy and stuck it where it belongs. Back then they all came with flywheels that had the teeth so you could add a electric starter. The starters were 110 volt. You plugged em in at the house started it and unplugged it, then off you went.

Sometimes the magnets get weak over time and that results in week spark.
Hand turning should produce a nice blue spark, not a yellowish one.

Hey all, have the magnet back in place now, used two part epoxy and have it clamped up by the woodstove for the night. (See attached action shot).I am assuming that its the correct flywheel 'cause its the one I took off and it sure doesnt look like anyones ever been into this old girl. I have the carb back off and apart to make sure I have all the passages clean and clear. Tomorrow is supposed to be fairly unpleasent - rain/snow/ice mix - so I figure I'll put it all back together in the a.m. warm and dry in the shop, and then go freeze on the tractor cleaning up whatever mess we end up with from the storm. I'll let you know how it goes, Rick

When you fit the woodruff key in make sure it does not have any burrs as it has to fit NICE. In that way the flywheel will pull on the taper real NICE.
I was having trouble with a Briggs last year and I had the flywheel off and on several times and got a burr and spun the woodruff key. I made another and made it fit NICE.

Not to beat a dead horse, but, those magnets on the inside of the flywheel look like they're associated with a charging system. In your picture, there appears to be a light spot on the outside of the flywheel and that would be where I would expect to see an embedded ( frequently riveted) magnet as part the magneto. On some of their older engines, Tecumseh did have the magneto coil underneath the flywheel. I just don't recall the flywheel magnet configuration being like that one is. Could tell more with a picture of what's on the engine under the flywheel.

Success at last...Thanks to all for their help and input. Reassmbled the whole shooting match, being sure to make the woodruff key and flywheel fit NICE. Put the tin back on, clamped the motor to the bench, little bit of gas and she fired right up. Ran nice and smooth - tomorrow I'll put it back on the snowblower and see what happens. I'm not certain but I believe the loose magnet was the source of my troubles - could these magnets generate the power for both the light and the ignition? I did not find any other magnets cast into the flywheel. Thanks again, Rick

By the way, not a whole lot disturbs that cat (ironically named Dog).....he's got it made and he knows it.
