90 ford 1ton diesel

Thanks for the info guys.

So I can wrap my head around this.. how is that 7.3 NA engine compaired to say.. a 6.0 PSD.. like I have in my f250?
You will be looking at 180 hp (130 kW) and 365 ft lb of torque from that IDI 7.3.
The 6.0 in your F250 makes 325 horsepower (242 kW) and 560-570 foot-pounds of torque depending on the year.

IIRC, the limiting factor on the older F-350 and F-450 Fords was the brakes, they were nowhere near as good as the ones on the newer trucks.

I have a 97 F350 PS. and it isn't close to my friends 6.0. total night and day both with and with out a trailer. i think if you want an older ford with more power i would look for a 99 to 03 7.3ps as you will be much more happy with there power.

I have owned a 7.3 and it was a Turbo model. It was still no comparison to the 6.0 Lets put it this way. My 7.3 with bigger exhaust, a chip, and air filter was probably still 100HP behind my 2 6.0's and my Dmax in stock form. While the torque was still there it will give performance like a big block gasser with great low end torque and decent fuel economy.

The 6.5 GM is not nearly as powerful. They have had more than their share of problem. My Uncle has one in a 3/4 ton Suburban that has honestly been trouble free but when the injector pump went it was a $3000 fix alone.

Thanks for the info guys.

to the poster about gm.. yes.. does perhaps look like the older metal. so if no plug in.. to add a controller I'm gonna have to tap the brake line then run all the wires myself I guess. I see it has a 7 pin plug for a 5th wheel or goose neck.. but I see no controller... the 90 ford I looked at had a 7 pin as well.. and a tekonsh controller.. etc. ( not that adding a controller is a big deal.. just keeping it all in mind )

My '99 newer body style 1/2 ton with the factory 7 wire had the brake controller plug in under the dash. I am not sure on the 1 ton.

That NA 7.3 is nothing like your 6.0, you would be sorely dissapointed if your wanting the same as the 6.0.
Your gonna have to go to a later turbo 7.3 to get close to the output of the 6.0.

Wow.. that much difference? I wasn't under the impression the 6.0psd #'s were so impressive.. I hear lotsa people bad mouthing the engine. ( though mine has been a cherry so far it's a 04.. etc. )

well for sure i don't want to drop much hp if any.. so... gotta keep lookin I guess.

thanks

my old '92 dodge ram/cummins trucks are 1/2 the horsepower of their modern day counterparts. they are also MUCH simpler; both in how they work, and when you need to work on them.

if you have a PSD, why do you need another truck?

i would much rather have an old 7.3idi than that 6.0 disaster you have in your other truck. that is a time bomb waiting to go off; we have all heard the stories. the modern PSDs are meant to have the characterisitcs of their gas-powered relatives: fairly quiet, V8 acceleration, 8 cylinders, etc. the old 7.3 is an entirely different animal-not necessarily a bad one...

Where i work we have 3 6.o psds.. never a hair of engine problems from any of them.. they are all 04 and all have between 90 and 130k miles on them.

quiet? not hardly.. they sound like freight trains... one of the bossmen has an 06 or 07 gm diesel.. now it's quiet...

I was looking for more tow capacity.. IE.. the 1 ton truck vs a 3/4 ton.. but I didn't want to sacrifice power..

I had an '86 with a 6.9 which was the older brother of the 7.3. Everyone told me the 6.9 would be good for 300K. That was right on the money. I had to replace the injector pump at 240K. That was the only trouble I ever had with it.
It was much more of a workhorse than the '89 460 gasser I replaced it with. Neither would compare to the 6.0 in power.
