went out with the wife for Vday, and while out drove past 2 car lots.. one had an 01 f350 on it, and the other an 03 f350

Both were closed so jotted down the numbers and will call in the am.

Can I assume that these will be the turbo'd 7.3 psd's?

If they are diesel, yes.

I have a 06 F-150. Picked it up a few weeks ago. No it's not desiel , but it bet better mpg then my v6 did. I only really have one question in two parts. It has a key lock by the licence plate for what? And it has a stock 6 point plug for trailer lights. Does this mean it's trailer break ready?

The 2003 F350 is the first year 6.0l PSD (stay away), the 03 F250's still had the 7.3l until 04. I believe there were only a handful of early build 2003 F-350 models that still had the 7.3l.
The number one killer of those 6.0's is sitting so if you don't plan on using it daily then plan on an $8k head gasket repair unless it's been taken care of.
My good friend has an 03 F350 6.0l and uses it as a daily driver and hauls a 35ft 5th wheel camper. No problems in 86k miles so far...

If it's like the Chevy's then the key lock by the plate is removed with the key and then you use the jack bar to reach a small winch under the bed that you turn CCW and it lowers the spare tire. I first noticed this on the late 90's Chevy Tahoe's, it's to help prevent tire thefts. The stock 7-pin connector means it is wired for a trailer brake controller, some trucks have the brake controller built-in from the factory but others (like my 03 RAM) just have the plug under the dash so you just need to purchase the controller and plug it in.

The '01 could be a great compromise of HP vs $$. I drive an '01 F350 PSD SRW at work and I like it a lot.

The 03 if a late model year could be a 6.0. I would say stay clear of the 03 but by this time, 7 years later, it should have all the bugs worked out. I would only consider it if the price was right and there was room to do some work if needed.

If the 03 is a 6.0 the tranny is twice the tranny behind the 7.3 Of course that is only the case if both are auto's. What I am saying is the auto's behind the 7.3's is the weak point.

I was thinking the same thing. the 01 looks overall in good condition. Only exterior flaws I saw were 3 cosmetic ones.

the front 'ground effect had a 1" split right inthe middle near the ground.. look slike something 2 drilled holes nd a zip tie :) would fix..

on the driver side step ral where you get into the truck, the molded ground effect covering the rail at the front where it joins the rest of the trim also has a split...

and in the rear, there is a small dent in the tailgate near the bottom passanger edge.. looks like the PO may have backed up into a trailer tounge (gooseneck ) without having his tailgate down. ( There is a gooseneck ball in the bed... If I get it, I'd need to remove it.. the ball looks like it is on some sort of shackle seperate from the plate.. similar to a flip over style.. but not as large.. has 2 chain link lift points for attaching stay chains.. must be a release lever somewhere... my dodge has a pop up ball with a lever under the drivers side rear fender well.. )

overall.. the cosmetics don't bother me none.. bothered the wife a little as she likes the 03 which is in .. well 99% condition.. which tells me it's gonna be more $$ too :)

will call today and find out...

thanks for the continued info guys... I'll report back after talking to the car lots.

HI SOUNDGUY I HAVE READ ALL OF YOUR POSTS FOR MANY YEARS. I HAVE A 99 SUPER DUTY DEISEL 2 WHEEL DRIVE WITH 113,000 miles aoto ALL STOCK NO CHIP.I BOUGHT IT 4 YEARS AGO WITH 98000 MILES, TO PULL MY 1984 L 305 KUBOTA LOADER/BACK HOE ON A 18FT REAR HITCH TRAILER. IT FEELS LIKE 8000 LBS. ALSO I HALL 10 ROUND BAILS (2 IN THE TRUCK) OF HAY 50 MILES ON THE EXPRESSWAY @ 55-65 MPH. IT PULLS IT WONDERFULL, I COULD KISS THAT TRUCK AFTER EVERY LOAD!!!! . WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT IT THE TORQUCONVERTER SOUNDED LIKE A RATTELING CAN OF MARBELS WHEN IT WAS WARMED UP AT IDEL. I HAD A TRIPPLE CLUTCH CONVERTWR INSTALLED FOR $1500.00 RUNS PERFECT. A 6 SPEED STICK WOULD BE BEST. INTRESTINGLY ENOUGH LAST WEEK I BOUGHT A 1989 F-350 DUMP 7.3 IDI FOR 3400.00 WITH 180,000 MILES. IT IS A FIXER UPPER BUT THE ENGINE AND STANDARD 5 SPEED TRANS AND BED ARE IN GOOD SHAPE WITH NEW TIRES. ANOTHER TOY ALONG WITH 3 DEXTA TRCTORS.

I have an 03 F350 4x4 dually crew cab with the 7.3. The stock numbers on that truck are 250 HP with 525 ft. lbs. of torque. I run an 80 HP program in my truck so I'm running in the neighborhood of 330 HP and 625 ft. lbs. of torque. Before I did the upgrades I put in guages, 4" exhaust, high flow intake, and ATS turbo shroud. It wasn't cheap but I can pull with any stock 6.0 out there. My 30' fifth wheel camper is no problem at all.

Like other's on here I think that you would be happy with an 01 to 03 with the 7.3. The 01's had an upgrade to the tranny cooler and is worth the extra cost. The only problem here in NC is that it is hard to find those trucks for sale, and if you do, many are well worn with high miles.

Good luck in your hunt.

here's an odd test drive report.

pulled out of the dealership with the 03.. started a lil rough.. but then when my 6.0 sets for a few weeks when it's cold it's a lil rough too.

got out on the road, noticed tranny wasn't shifting up out of '2', jiggled the shifter handle then all the dash gauges went out! turned right around and drove back asap :)

I was nice and told the salesman I *might* conside rthe vehicle, again, after they fixed it, and my mechanic looked at it, and we worked on the sale price...

we will see.
