uhhh....Both cases are of a stranger unexpectedly knocking on your door. What does somebody's appearance have to do with it?

Remember folks: "Always wear clean underwear in case you're in an accident..... and be properly dressed!! ....& have a proper hair cut too!! ....& be of the correct sex, demographic, & socio-economic status."

I can imagine it now.

Late one night:
Stranger's voice calls out in the darkness: "Help! Help! Somebody! There's been an accident!"
Homeowner: "Yes, yes, but first: What are you wearing? "Do you have any tattoos?"

His sceneries are way different than the OP's. Yes appearance says a lot.. Did you happen to read the guy had warrants? Who would have guessed...

If your wife or kids were home alone when this happened, would you expect them to open the door for the guy and invite him in to use the telephone?

Maybe it's because I'm from a rural area, versus a city or surburban area where superficial appearances are more important to some, but around here appearances don't mean sh*t!

The guy in ripped, dirty clothing may be a farmer worth $millions, and way more honest, trustworthy and hardworking than some conman that's nicely dressed like a TV minister or used car salesman.

If anyone comes to my back door in the middle of the night, I am assuming the worst. Then we will proceed from there with the safety of my family and myself as the first priority.

Absolutely. Pay attention to that little voice inside that tells you that something isn't right. I hired a guy to do some tree work for me; he came to me at noon and wanted some money "for gas". I scrounged around and found something like $40 cash, and gave that to him. I noticed all the tats later when he took of his shirt. Got his name when I wrote out the check, so I checked him out on the D.O.C. website. Guess what? He was a convicted felon, ex con, drugs, intimidating witnesses, burglary, etc.
