You need to upgrade that factory 2" receiver. I have broke the one on my 04 F-250 with the same ratings. Get a Titan 2.5" unit. They are rated at something like 15,000# and 17,000# WD.

The other big issue with 2" receivers is the hardware that you get to go with them. Most is rated at 10,000# or less with few exceptions but if you step up to the real stuff, 2.5", you can get bars and balls rated at 25,000#.

By the way its not just me who has broken the hitch. My uncle did also and I know of a few other guys who have doing heavy bumper pulling. These were not old rusted out hitches either, 2 years old or less on both me and my uncles.

If I got to that heavy of a bumper pull I'll have to consider that. Would be nice to find a gooseneck adapter that fit those rails the 5th wheel is on.. that way i don't have to booger it up to go to a gooseneck, since it has the custom bed.. etc.

If not available you could have one built or you could convert the GN trailers over to 5th wheel.

Me personally I hate 5th wheel and GN because I like the beds of my trucks. If i had to have one it would be GN and I would convert any 5th wheel crap over to GN.

I talked to the rv place today and they make a gn adapter that will fit the 5th wheel rails.. so when/if I get a gn trailer i am good to go.

Hi Chris - You've had the truck for a few days now. How is it?

I drove it around yesterday. had to order a 10' 7pin extension to make the traielr connection from the bed to a bumper pull. Looked at a gooseneck plate that will attach to my 5th wheel frame rails... will consider getting that when i get my next trailer ( whenever that is ).

truck rides good. I can tell it is heavier than my 250.. don't turn as sharp and is harder to park.. um.. can't go thru some drive thru's too :)

feels 'torquier' though not as quick on the acceleration as the 6.0psd.. but then.. I was prepaired for that, reading a few other threads compairing the 7.3 and 6.0 psd's. on the plus side.. I guess I don't have to worry about it's heads blowing off either :)

finally figured out how to program the clarion radio presets and set the time :)

rpm range is different than the 250. to hit 55mph in the 250 I run at about 1550 rpm once everthing is settled. it's more like 2100 in the 450. IIRC the 250 has more top end rpm on the tach whereas the 450 looks like it's red at 4k or so.

Boy, for someone looking for a beater, you got a pretty sweet ride! Very nice.

Hey SG

I just thought of you when I went to Harbor Freight yesterday. There was a newer Dodge sitting on about 38" tires, stacks out the bed, ect ect ect.

Anyway he had a set of nuts hanging off the hitch. When I mean nuts I mean nuts, like from large nuts and bolts. The had to be 4" like the kind used to secure a metal street light or telephone pole to its foundation. He had a piece of chain strung though them and that was it. Kind of a new swing on things, no pun intended.

wife nixed the idea on a beater when she realized I'd likely be driving it out of state on my tractor safaries... ( I'm sure that 90 f350 I looked at would have made it..she wasn't so sure.. :) )
