Having 32 speeds in an Ag tractor makes about as much sense as having a screen door in a submarine. I have 12 in my little L3830 and have need used them all.

First time I've heard this. My next door neighbor farms 900 acres, produce, crop, hay, and beef. He can't get enough speeds. He went as far as to mention that one of his planting tractors the creeper gear is not slow enough. In other words, if it made no sense than why does virtually every major manufact. offer a choice of tranny's with one having at least 24 gears or higher. I think Messick's summed it pretty well by saying . . .

32 gears in an AG tractor are important because of these are used for speed sensitive applications. Take a sprayer, where a 0.3mph may change your spraying rate several hundred gallons over a few acres.... that ain't good... so more speeds are always better. The big thing now is IVT which is infinite speeds (and almost infinite expense)

Go with the extra gears and weight. The extra speeds benefit has been explained. On the wieght side, a round baler can push a tractor around on hills. The baler 4x6 baler I use lists a minimum tractor weight of around 6500 lbs. I use a MF with a dry weight of 8600 lbs and on steep hills it can you can really tell the baler is back there. The weight also help when handling the bales with a FEL. I personally like the MX 108 and the MX 125 for those reasons for what I do and came very close to getting one. The extra heighth also ads visibility.
Good luck

I'd go for the heavier tractor since you're doing ground engaging work. As you probably know, the heavier tractor will be steadier & smoother. The lighter unit will get thrown around more-and so will you. A heavier tractor would be steadier doing hay work, too.

If your work is more ground sensitive, orchard spraying, driving over lawns, etc. then the lighter unit is a better option.

At 18,000lbs, my backhoe might not be a sexy as a mini-ex, but when you dig, push or load, it's a lot more stable platform.

Yea... not happening. The AG economy is going full bore right now. Most commodity prices are way up. The price of corn is 3x what it was two years ago. Many companies are having a hard time building enough equipment.

I hope your right and I'm wrong because it will eventually hurt my rental business too. Somebody has finally learned how to maniupulate the futures market and I don't mean speculators either, go figure...
