Hey, Soundguy! How about an owners report, from a real owner of a 99 3500 automatic? I've had mine for 6 years, bought it with 90k miles on it to tow a 12k boat. Sold the boat, kept the truck. May be the best truck I've ever owned. Tranny is strong, as long as you maintain it and don稚 hotrod it. Put a temp gauge on the tranny. Mine stays very cool unless I'm dragging a hay trailer around the pasture picking up bales. When it starts getting hot, I park it for a while. Body-integrity wise, it's very solid. My doors still clunk like new, dash is perfect, no squeaks or rattles. I did have to replace the injector pump at around 100k, and the lift pump at the same time. Since that time, (20k miles), it's been very reliable. One hint: they drive a lot more comfortable with some weight in the bed

I would not hesitate to jump in and drive cross-country in that rig right now...towing 20k....

If there is anything else you want to know

Great motor but the rest is a Dodge. You know what to look at since you already have a 1500. Around here they rust like crazy but you should not have that problem since you live in FL. My 03 2500 rusted the doors, tailgate, and front quarters in 2 years. Auto tranny is the big issue that comes up over and over again. A good aftermarket rebuild with a larger TQ converter and cooler will go a long way.

As for the Cummins there were a batch of bad blocks. If its a 53 block run. Also there is a killer dowel pin to look into. It a dowel pin up on the front of the engine that can come loose and fall into the timing gear set destroying the engine. There are preventive fixes for that.

Check the entire fuel system. Does it have stock lift pump? Original VP44 injector pump? Fuel pressure gauge?

Stock lift pumps are prone to failure, leading to VP44 failure. A FP guage or low pressure indicator is a must. Just replaced my VP44 a month ago on my 98.5. If you need to diagnose a fuel issue, check out Blue Chip Diesel Performance Specialists

Does it have the breather bottle in front or does the breather hose just run down the bottom of the crankcase cover? If bottle, radiator is probably covered in oil and would need to be cleaned. If no bottle, then axle is covered in oil and no big deal unless you want everything spotless. Home Page of Mopar1973Man And Cloud 10 Computers is a great site for anything related to cummins engines. He has a way to bypass the breather bottle and eliminate the problems associated with it.

Might want to also look at cumminsforum.com

Chris

Saw an 01 the other day and his doors were all rotted at the bottoms, he was not a happy camper.
My 95 had no surface rust after 12 years, low milage but 12 years of driving northern climate etc. Hope by the time my 07 was built Dodge fixed the rot issue.
After seeing that 01 with the rotted doors I had a dream that my 07 was doing the same thing, woke up all upset, thinking I gotta spray some oil/rust preventative in the bottom of those doors.

Well, lifetime warantee takes the tranny worries out of the equation.
You do want to heed those warnings about checking the fuel pump, starving the high pressure pump leads to failure and you could buy a whole replacement gas engine for what one of those injection pumps cost.

I'm a Cummins fan, don't know much about that year but I guarantee you one thing, you will like the way it sounds :D the new ones are a little to quiet.

anyone got any info on a 99 dodge ram turbo diesel 3500?

one just popped up for sale locally.. regular cab, etc.. interior ok except for a tear int he seat that a seat cover will hide. :)

While I love my fords.. I do like my dodge ram 1500.. like the layout, etc.

unit is an auto, has gn adapter.. etc.

stuff like tow capacity, engine specs.. anything to watch out for.. etc.. etc..

The 99 model year was the first full year for the 24-valve Cummins (it was 12-valve until the 1998.5 model year). IIRC the 24-valve engines didn't have the killer dowel problem that pestered the 12-valve model.

Also, there's the "53 block" problem--cracked engine block problem for 1999-2001 Cummins engine manufactured in Brazil.

Here's info on locating the "53" mark on the block

If you want to see if your engine block could be one of these dreaded "53" blocks, crawl under the front, left side, and look up at the block on the front, directly under the injector pump (by the PS pump). You should see a large wiring harness mounted to the block. Directly below this, just above where the oil pan meets the block you will look for a "53" cast in the block. The numbers will be about 1 inch tall.

Here's some towing info for the 1999 Rams

Maximum Tow Ratings:
All configurations and axle ratios of manual transmission
trucks: 20,000 GCWR.
All configurations of automatic transmission trucks: 3.54
axle 16,000 GCWR, 4.10 axle 18,000 GCWR.
Note: Maximum permissible trailer weight will vary by model
and options. For example, 4x4 models are rated for lower
maximum trailer weights than 4x2 models, and extended/
quad cab models are rated for lower maximum trailer
weights than standard cab models. Highest trailer weight
rating is for a 2500 regular cab 4x2 manual transmission
long bed = 14,150 pounds trailer.
Lowest trailer weight rating is for a 3500 quad cab 4x4
automatic transmission 3.54 axle = 9,050 pounds trailer.

Also:
Six-speed transmission removed from sale due to quality
control issues.
Users find the 4.10 axle ratio is best for towing with the 24-
valve engine.

So you're collecting vintage Ford tractors AND old PUs. Some guys have all the fun:laughing:.

Good luck.

The four issues I know of with a '99 is (1) the "53" block that has been known to crack, but it is on a very small percentage of engines. I have a '98 12-valve with that block and I'm not worried in the least. (2) The "killer dowel pin" may or may not pertain to that truck. I have heard that Cummins did not change to the new housings until all old style housings were used up, and last I knew, exactly when that was wasn't released. There is an easy fix to retain it. (3) The lift pump issue. Put a fuel pressure gage on it. (4) There is a "tone" wheel on the crankshaft that the crankshaft sensor reads that has been known to come off (it's a two piece ring that bolts to the crank) I fixed the Father In-laws truck that it had come loose on. He was lucky that it didn't come off. It has been known to break crankshafts if it comes off. All that said, I wouldn't be afraid of it. Most important thing is to put a fuel pressure gage on it. If you'r going to have a problem, the lift pump is the most common.
I drive Ford Super Duties at work. I like my Dodges just fine.

My '01 does not show any rust. But... It is a happy sunny N. Calif truck... I can't imagine being in the midwest or north east. Have visited back there, and seen the rust on cars/trucks.

I was surprised on my trip to Ct an Vt 10 years ago, to see cars with lots of rust, but at the same time the vegetation roadside looked healthy. I would have expected salting the roads would kill all the roadside vegetation and damage streams ect.

Saw an 01 the other day and his doors were all rotted at the bottoms, he was not a happy camper.
