A bit of progress. Putting the YM240D to work

Yea you get leverage that will equate to more lift needed than if it were 500 at the arms. Think about it. You can easily lift 15 pounds. Not put that 15 pounds on the end of a 10 foot fiberglass rod and assume the rod was almost no weight and could hold the weight. Now try and lift that weight. And not verticle if you could.

There's a bit of help here.

If we use clemsonfor's number of 1430lbs at the tip of the lower link and assume that point (the lower 3PT lift arm pin) is 2' from the rotation point (the axle that it rotates around) that gives 2860ft-lbs of torque. If that's the max torque available, it would lift something 500lbs if it were as far away as ~5.75' (2860ft-lbs/500lbs). From this 5.75' we need to remove the 2' for the length of the existing lift arm leaving 3.75'. So if my BH weights 500lbs and that center of mass were placed 3.75' BEYOND the lift points it should just barely lift it.

If it weights 600lbs that distance drops to ~2.75' BEYOND the lift pins. As a rotary cutter it's fairly symmetric about the cutter spindle so I think it's not a bad assumption to view the gear box as the center of mass. I'm not near the BH but given that it cuts 5', the blade has to be something close to 2.5'. I'd say the distance from the mounting pins to the center of mass/gear box is under 3'.

I think this tractor should be able to lift a 600lbs where the gear box is 2.5' beyond the attachment pins. It's not a wide margin, but I still think it should work. We've also got clemsonfor's heavier finish mower (when he's standing on it) and duanew1's BH (which looks about like mine) as evidence of strong lifts. Although he didn't say anything about lifting with his weight added to it, when duanew1 climbs onto his BH it doesn't appear to drop.

Here's another link for calculating lifting capacity. Tom_Veatch provides a simple formula. It appears he created it using measurements of lifting capacity from two different locations- at the lift pins and 24" aft of the lift pins. With these 2 measurements he was able to create the formula.

Lift capacity on the tractor being discussed in that thread is a couple hundred pounds less than the stated lift of the YM240. Using their formula/specs I get (1186lbs-14.7lbs/in*36in=)656lbs. I really don't think my BH weighs more than that....

Does the point where the v article arms hook into the lower as screw up the torque formula? The torque is not being applied at the pivot point of the axle but out closer to the end?

Wooly, did you ever install the new loader valve?

Wooly, did you ever install the new loader valve?
Hi Scotty,

Thanks for asking. Unfortunately, I've not yet installed it. I've been busy, as well as traveling a lot, the last month. I've got a number of things I'd like to do to my tractor before winter and I've been saving up a few bucks. I need to get new hoses for the FEL since I'm going to run everything from the front pump. I also need to get a hydraulic filter and mount for that. I need a handful of things from Hoye's. I'm kinda waiting until I've got a couple hundred bucks stashed but I sure would like to get this done before winter. Oh yeah, I'd really like to load the rear tires. Frankly the loader could probably get me through winter the way it is, but I'm still hoping to fix it before the snows fly. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if it's another month before this is sorted. Too many things to do on the house I'm building. To be honest, the Yanmar is pretty functional (though sometimes frustrating) the way she is. The most important thing to do before winter would be loading the rears.

Are you all set for winter snow?

Ready for snow? Well I'm as ready as I can be. My rig is set up with turf tires, they are loaded and I run four link chains all year long. Traction has never been a problem for me in the snow and I use a back blade and the bucket. This year year should be easier as I added power steering. I am still working out some of the bugs with that install I just updated from a 7 CC pump to a 9 CC pump. That made my loader more responsive at lower rpms but its still not the same. Adding power steering does change the way the tractor hydraulics react. I've always had what I would think is weak curl cylinders and I'm wondering if my joystick controller is partially to blame. On my joystick valve, I don't have float or power beyond so I'm interested in how your install goes because I just might pull the trigger if you had success.

Hi Scotty-

I've got a very weak curl function as well and I'm convinced that my loader valve is to blame. And after 30 years of use, why wouldn't it be. I'll certainly keep you posted but with alternator freezing up on my everything will be delayed even further. Fixing that is now first on my list. I've ordered it ($30 from local auto zone (with a big 'Thank You' to California)) and it should be in this week. Hopefully it won't take long to replace but it might be all the tractor time I have this weekend.

I did manage to get the rears loaded with about 23-gals of WWF each. Haven't used it much since doing that but it already feels more stable, steady, and smooth.

Hopefully this weekend I can fix the alternator and get all my measurements and part lists for the FEL. Hopefully in December I'll have a nice weekend where I can pull all FEL stuff off and get it re-done.

another good reference to the cheap alternator for the Datsun that fits the tractor. I wonder if it will be even cheaper on a site like rockauto...if your doing another order your already paying for the sipping!
