A Great Day to be Plowing

We have heavy wet clay soils up here in spots and a few people buy the european plows so they can do a nice job. Very few people plow now, lots of no-till or min till because of the hills.

I didn't know their plows (don't you love how we spell plow different ) were Huard.

We used to have an MF 4x 16" plough that was a rebadged Huard. When i was searching for parts, i found them on a JD plough which was also built by Huard...
I think Overum has a pretty good dealer network in North America ?

We start to use American min-till methods in Holland as well. We are on very light sand soil and each time we bury the organic matter, the newly seeded grassland turns to dust if we dont spray a lot. This year we started rippin' with a borrowed 3 leg ripper, when the soil was dry enough to generate some more traction, 2 passes with the 11 tine chisel plough, then spreading hog slurry and horse muck when the soil was dry enough to bear the tanker and spreader, then another pass with the chisel to loosen the tracks, and a final pass with the Kongskilde triple K to create a seedbed.

Not really min-till but a field thats been tramped by horses all winter, gets compacted pretty bad, and tillage should be done in several stages, because if you loosen wet soil too intense, it will loose all cohesion and be total mud.

And driving on wet soil really compacts very deeply. Out west they are using GPS to stay on the same tracks year in year out so one area is quite compacted yet the fields stay loose. Of course you need massive implements to keep the wheel track area small compared to the rest.
