Fredex, I sure would like to know which brand it was a Ferguson or a Dearborn. I see a metal tag on the 3point but it is too rusted, there are some numbers on the shank but I don't know what they mean. My Dad said he might have some fenders laying around. Thanks for the "new terminology" (to me) now I am getting close to being able to do "real" tractor talk with my Dad. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nat, thanks for the reply, can't wait to start turning soil.

Jim, You are right we have already planted this year in our "small weekend garden". We had so much to do to get settled in after the move that a new and bigger garden was low priority. I might try to do a fall garden with my new toy. Next year I hope to plant enough corn for us and the raccoons and make that big watermelon patch I have been dreaming about for a long time. After living in the big city for the last 50 years I still fell like it is not real to finally be living in the country. I have a lot of catching up to do and I'm loving every bit of it. I will be interested in seeing what your middle buster looks like so I can keep a lookout for one at the local auction.

Bird thanks for the tip on Tractor Supply Co. I actually have one within 30 miles.

Jerry G. mine is a 7 foot also. Do you have a picture of yours? Were you at the same auction I was at? There was another cultivator exactly like you described, with the springs, at this auction that went for about $250. I think a local tractor dealer won the bid.

There were about 300 people at this estate auction and bidding was fierce. There were no steals. I got out bidded on many items. I got my cultivator for $275, not a steal but the owner will have a bit more to retire on now. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I'm sure the tractor dealers on TBN will jump in and say "I got one of those on my lot for $150. If so I guess I paid for the thrill of beating out that other sucker. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I also got this 7 foot blade at the auction also - see attachment. I have been wanting a blade for terrace and ditch work. The box blade I have is good for road leveling and pulling dirt but I also found that I needed to be able to throw the dirt quickly to the side and out of the way when making a sloped cut. More toys to play in the dirt with, can't wait, but first I must build for a while. There will be a steel building post coming soon.

EDIT Jerry G Your picture came while I was writing this post. So, what was your winning bid? It was not the same cultivator at the auction I attended, that one actually had "coil" springs on it.

( you can get sweeps in various sizes and even chisels for a wide variety of applications

Tractor Supply Co. has a pretty good selection, also. )

Bird, to get the sweeps at most TSCs, I think you have to special order them. The one in Decatur has stopped stocking sweeps and so has the one in Gainesville (a brand new store). A store manager there told me they used to stock them, but they mostly sat on the shelf collecting dust. They are using the shelf space for items that sell better.

Don, here's a picture of the middle buster. I don't think you will find one of these unless it is home-made like mine. The buster is an old horse-drawn type with angle iron welded to each side and drilled to fit the cultivator. If you look at the front beam on the cultivator frame, you'll notice it has been beefed-up to take the extra load of the middle buster.

I don't think you paid too much. Heck, the little flimsy one at TSC is $200 and it's not half the cultivator you have. These things are built tough and can be adjusted anyway you want them. The one Jerry has is also nice. I may try to keep my eyes open for one like Jerry's. You just can't buy new stuff like that. They quit making them and went to using herbicides like Fredex says. I'm just really happy to see there are so many of these still around and being used. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Also, notice the unused sweeps have been loaded upside down in the feet. That's the way I carry them when not in use. It's just a tip that you might not think of if somebody doesn't show you. Ask your Dad if he ever did this. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's a nice looking blade also, Don. I need to R&R mine. I have a couple of jobs I could use it on around my ponds.

Jim, that last few years when I've shopped at Tractor Supply, I was looking for other things instead of sweeps, so you're probably right. I bought mine several years ago at the Tractor Supply in Waco, and at that time, they had lots of them in different sizes.

I got my plow for $190. The real steal was a running Ford 2N that went for just $325. A nice MF 50 diesel went for $5000.

Jerry, $190 is the price I was wanting to get mine at.

Jim, Good looking middle buster, what do you use yours for? I took another look at my Dad's old iron pile and I saw a huge two sweep middle buster. I may have to borrow it one day and see what it does.

Mike the Local Lee County auction can be previewed online. It is Mayer Auctioneering. Sometimes they have it at their yard at Hwy21 and Hwy77 and sometimes on the owners estates. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the next auction. I usually go to the yard a day ahead to check out the items I am interested in to see if it is worth my time to attend the auction. Some things are worn out some still have a lot of life left in them. If you see something you want me to check out just PM me, if you trust me not to overbid you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That's funny. I also went to an auction yesterday and bought a Ferguson plow similar to yours. It is a similar model, but a different version. Mine has eleven spring shanks and it came with the original crop shields.

JerryG....I have located one exactly like yours that I am considering buying. The guy wants $125.00 for it. Does that seem like a fair price? Also, what are crop shields?

21 & 77 ... you can almost walk to that one. Have you found Karen a job yet to support your new activity? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've been telling Bernice that she needs to start networking up there for a high paying job to be able to keep me in the manner in which I'd like to become accustomed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
