Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

Dang Richard, I've passed through smaller towns than that barn./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Glad your all set up and all the babies are at their new home. I know you put a lot of hours in this summer. Looks like it all paid off.

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

Very impressive! I didn't realize the size until I had a closer look at the 5th wheel sitting under the overhang (the trailer looks small and I know it is NOT!)...

How about some pictures of the inside?

NICE JOB!

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

We horse people refer to those types of trailers as goosenecks. Much easier to tow than a bumper pull IMHO.

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

Gooseneck vs. 5th wheel...

I'm probably totally wrong here, but, I thought it depended upon the type of connector... With gooseneck using a ball type connector and the 5th wheel using the ?receiver? type connector!?!? Of course, I didn't look close enough at the photos to see the which one Doc has...

Someone set me straight... I know you will... ;-)

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

You're right, it does depend upon the type of connector. The GN uses a ball and the 5th wheel looks like a tractor trailer connection. When we purchased our stock trailer for transporting our horses, the standard connection, in fact the only connection we saw was the GN. I have a DrawTite removable GN hitch in the bed of my truck which allows me to still use the bed (extended cab, short bed) of my truck...no hitch ball sticking up in the middle.

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

Yep, you understand the difference all right. The thing I'm not sure of is why all the travel trailers (recreational vehicles) I know of use the 5th wheel while all the other trailers I can think of (horse, dump, utility, etc.) use the goose neck.

Good question Bird! I think I've only seen one 5th wheel type horse trailer and that was a VERY BIG one!!

I wonder if the 5th wheel is rated for more pulling power!?!? It certainly looks more substantial... Seems like it would be a bit easier to hook up also!?!?

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

could the diff be the amount of weight directly on the hitch? Assuming that a 5th wheel can take more weight than a gooseneck??

Re: A long summer\'s work payoff

More pulling power, or higher tongue weight might have something to do with it. I know I used to pull a 5th wheel travel trailer that had 2,500# pin weight (and that was just a 32' "lite" trailer). I would have thought some of the construction equipment I've seen on the goose neck trailers would be awfully heavy, but maybe the weight was more on the axles than the pin.
