So here's the deal.

I am coming out of a Bobcat CT335 which is a large compact. Looking to get into a entry size utility. Need 45-55hp, 4x4, R4 tires, FEL, suspension seat, tilt wheel, ROPS, and a hydro shuttle.

So I start looking at the MX5100 and see that it is basically the same size as my old CT335. I then look at the M5140 and it is a very nice design, but at $30K about $3-4K more than I want to spend.

So I start calling around to see if I can find a better price and I get this dealer who says........ Why not get a 5640SU? I tell him I don't want the gearshift between my legs. So he then says....... Why not get a MX5100? I tell him my old tractor was that size and it is too small. He say's........The MX5100 and the M5140 are the same size tractors.:confused2: I tell him they are not even close in looking at Kubota specs or in person.

Is there no longer any honest people in this business?

I just want a good tractor for a good value, but Kubota makes it so hard because they have a million models and their own dealers don't have a clue.

So I ask you folks, for $26-27K and the specs I posted above, what is the best bang for the buck utility tractor in Kubotas line up? (tractor must be new)

Are the model numbers correct? MX5100, 5640SU, M5140?

The MX5100 and the M5140 have the same engine so maybe that is the dealer's point. They will do the same amount of work. (Perhaps you were thinking of the M5640SU instead.)

If the MX5100 is too close to your old tractor then anything with a M5xxx is going to be close to it also. 5% to 10% increase in HP is not going to be earth-shaking.

You may be satisfied with a M7040SU. The "SU" designates "special utility" and is essentially a bare-bones model. You may have to pay extra for a suspension seat and tilt wheel (not sure).

The M7040SU prices out at about $33,500. Negotiating with dealers should get you 10% - 15% off of that price.

The M5640SUD comes in at $30,200. Same negotiating deal. But it is only an increase of 5% HP over your old tractor. The M7040SU will knock your socks off.

Good luck.

If I'm not mistaken, you really don't have a lot of choices with Kubota with the options you want in your budget. Its your budget that is limiting you and the hydro shuttle. You'll have some more options in the Grand L lineup but prices jump considerably. Best bang for the buck would be the MX5100.

In looking at the specs, the M5140 appears to be several inches bigger in every way. What does the MX bring to the table over the M or vice versa?

Example using the CT335 and the MX5100.......
BC - Length 134.3 MX - 122.8
BC - Width 62.6 MX - 69.7
BC - Height 93.6 MX - 95.7
BC - HP 38 MX - 52
BC - Weight 37xx MX - 37xx
BC - Wheelbase 69.5 MX - 74.6

So basically, frame and tractor wise very close, with the MX5100 having 14 more HP and a slightly longer wheelbase.

Now when you add in the M series it gets you a longer, heavier, wider tractor
Length - 135.6
Width - 73
Height - 95.3
HP - 52
Weight - 4550
Wheelbase - 80.7

So my problem is thus. 30% more HP in the same size tractor(MX5100) or 30% more HP in a bigger, but not a huge amount in the M5140

I would love to step up to a 6040, but price is well above $30K. And the SU series is way too bare bones and has the shift lever in between your legs which I can't deal with. Other problem is that I was spoiled by all the standard features on the Bobcat (tilt, cruise, suspension seat, etc) and there is no way I would want to "downgrade" in a bigger, more expensive tractor.

I would double check those weights. My L3940HST weighs 3627# without FEL attached and no ballast. I would think the MX5100 would be much heavier. Philip.

I would have to agree, and besides it has the x-tra wide front tires. For a stock tractor I like the way it is set up. My L4350 is a very similar setup and I had to spend x-tra dollars to get it how I wanted.

What are planning to do with the tractor is the deciding factor. You really cant go off of want you want because I want an enclosed cab and a bat wing deck but i can't really use them much less afford.
I have the mx5100 and it does all i need and more. My only complaint is the seat

Numbers are right from Kubota catalog. Tractor only, no FEL

As I said, the mx5100 is very close to my old Bobcat in all ways except horsepower. I need more FEL load capacity, more breakout and more hp.

Since you don't tell us where you live it makes it more difficult,

But -
Barlow's or Messicks - talk to them. I know Barlow's delivers all over the US for a reasonable price.

Yes but still haven't given any details in the work planned. So in that case go with a M135x and you be set.
