That guy either flat out sucks with a bow and shouldn't be hunting with it; was shooting from way too far of a distance; or he never sited in his bow before going out for the hunt.

JUST SPEAKING FROM THE DEVILS ADVOCATE POSITION . . .

Those all sound like good arguements to push for a ban, at least from the standpoint of the animal rights wacko perspective. Especially coming from someone who is proficient with a bow. Now they have circumstancial "evidence" that some hunters are incapable of a clean humane harvest and that would lead to the likelyhood of a shot that mames rather than kills.

Bob, there's not only circumstantial evidence but eyewitness as well. Some so called hunters shouldn't be allowed to hold a gun/bow. I bet if you take a poll of the TBN hunters, you'd find that most know more than one so called hunters that shouldn't be hunting. A few bad hunters can make the whole bunch look bad.

Slydog,
I hadn't thought of the distance thing and equated it to more sporting, but you are correct in that you have to get closer to the target, making it more likely the deer will notice you and take off before you have a good shot. That is a very good point and you sound like an ethical hunter.

Not only do you have to be closer to use a bow, the path where the arrow will fly has to be free of any obstructions, even a small branch can knock an arrow off its course. While there can be a similar effect on a bullet, it's much more pronounced on an arrow.

So true. You could even subsititute the words "tractor owners" for "hunters" in the above sentence. I should hope we would all not be viewed in the same light as some of the folks in the "Safety" forum. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

( Don't confuse the HSUS with your local Humane Society. )

I didn't, but it is important to remember. They just share part of a name, as you say. Like the local fire department and the Chicago Fire Soccer team

( The HSUS is an animal rights organization, not animal welfare. They get their money because people think they are donating to the local animal shelters, when in fact they have nothing to do with animal welfare. They are a pro-animal rights organization just like PETA. )

Well, my experience is different. Not all the people who work there are rabid.

They ARE a pro-animal rights organization, I agree. They are also a very useful resource for local animal shelters and adoption centers, pet rescue education, and have made a variety of other useful contributions. As I say, the useful stuff gets a lot less press. It's just not as interesting to the newspapers.

and they were silly enough to put it on some form of public viewing, that in itself is a joke.

I agree this guy should not be close to a bow, unless it is a Christmas bow.........

You mean like the guy that sprayed me from a distance with a shotgun blast dove hunting one year.........., safe yes, sting, yes, get in his @#$ oh yeah!

Or the guy who years ago shot a dead rabbit, while I was going to get it after killing it, and then had the @#$% to say he killed it. The dust around my feet came off, running him OFF my property that he did NOT have permission to be on.

Yeah a know a few too many I am afraid.

Bob,

The animial rights people are trying to get there nose under the tent.

California passed a law earlier this year banning fois gras since it is alleged that force feeding the birds is cruel. The feeding sounds cruel but the birds don't mind and like the food from what I have read. Not only is Kalifornia on this but many countries in Europe are on the band wagon as well. They have passed laws giving the producers 10-15 years to come up with a new way to get fat livers from the birds.

These laws will take away peoples incomes without compensation. And because its alleged that its cruel to feed the geese and ducks in a certain way. The writer of a food newsletter I get that documented the laws against current fras gras production. He also went to a farm in France to see the operation and said that the birds would run up to the farmer when for food whenever he/she would enter the pen. Hardly sounds like the hate the process if they charge the farmer....

Fais Gras is a fattened liver that is prepared in a couple of different ways and is supposed to taste very good. Never had the stuff myself. The "good" stuff lists for about eight dollars an ounce... Doubt I'll be eating either. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But it surely does not sound like it should be banned....

Later,
Dan
