Well , not really new , it's been tried time and time again . This system may just work ,even though I thought it was a joke when I first read about it . I've linked the entire thread . It goes on for something like 7 pages . The Video of the system is in post # 8 .
But , If You have the time the whole thread is worth reading .

Hey , it might be a good thing for those that don't have the time or inclination to learn how to sharpen a chain .

My Dad had a "power sharp" Craftsman saw in the 70's --sometimes bad ideas do not get better with time -or the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result:thumbsup:

I had a craftsman power sharp saw around the same time . It's the reason I learned how to sharpen a chain :). That's also why I thought the idea was a joke when I first read it.
But , Oregon may have gotten it to work . They certainly seem to have put a lot of time and effort into it .

Its not a bad idea for homeowner that uses their chainsaw once or twice a year for storm clean up, a blade would probably last them 10+ years and its easy fro them to maintain an edge. I will probably go a traditional route for sharpening my chain till I get good at it, then look at gadgets. The same reason I worked an axe for a long time before I decided to get a chainsaw. You can always learn something from historical methods.

It will be interesting to see how fast, or if, the chainsaw users go for this sharpener system.

Can go to their site to see a video (save reading 7 pages of the thread :) )

PowerSharp sharpens chain on the saw, on the job, in seconds

To me, it is a gimmick that I won't be interested in trying. But how fast others buy it remains to be seen.

Cool! I actually participated in some of their market research. I spent about 20 minutes with a couple of Oregon guys. They asked all kinds of questions about cost, time, display in store etc. I got two free Oregon hats out of the deal. This was about a year and a half ago so it's cool to see it come to market.

And Pushing Tin, what were your thoughts? Know anyone using this system?

I didn't know there were only three ways for us to sharpen our saws{according to their site} We either do it manually send it to a shop or leave it be. Dang I better take my electrical sharpeners back. This thing is a crock, I won't waste my money

I also owned one of those craftsman saws way back when.I think it's up in the loft of my barn. russ

Read the fine print. PowerSharpョ chain is as durable and hard-working
as other Oregonョ 3/8 pitch, low-profile chain. Then it goes on to say no special tools needed or down time to get sawing again.
Looks like this gimmick is a special tool and all it takes right now is a $3 file and 5mins and your back at it the old way :confused2: .

It seemed like a great product, but I have not actively looked for it since it was released. This thread was the first clue that it was finally out in the marketplace. I can see this appealing to timber fallers, tree people etc, people who cut a lot of trees and where time really is money. For the average joe like me I have no real use for it. I have 4 chains currently, I sharpen them myself for a while and then take them in for a real sharpening at $5 per chain. When I'm cutting trees at my place it's only for thinning and firewood, I'm not in a hurry so saving 10 minutes once or twice a day to sharpen my chain makes no difference to me.

If they gave me the complete system I'd be happy to run it and give my opinion. The next time I'm at the hardware store I'll go price out what a bar, chain and sharpener would cost for my Stihl Woodboss.

Thats only going to work if you run 3/8LP you know 3/8 lo pro 91 type chain, made for small saws, not even for the likes of the MS290 wood boss. Not to many timber guys running oregon 91 3/8 lo pro on the big saws out there. :confused2:

Just going to breed ignorance i think as if this is the only way you can sharpen a saw properly then should you really be using a saw ? When i did my forestry tickets years ago the first test is free hand sharpening if you can't do it you fail !

Hmm, well most people I know don't change their own oil, sharpen their own lawn mower blades etc. Lots of people don't use their saws often enough to really learn how to sharpen their own chains. Most people on this site are much more self sufficient than the general public though.

I priced the chain and just the replaceable stone at Lowe's out of curiosity sake for my little trim saw with 3/8 lo pro chain. Which by the way is the only chain for this gimmick as of right now. $31 for powersharp chain compared to my $10 other oregon VXL chain. So I could buy 3 of my regular VXL chains and have them on hand .
