You are the guy with the TC40A. You're in charge of this research. . . report back with your findings.;):D

Lol. I will check it.

Did you get your 3PH arms working properly, was it the piston seals? after looking at the flow diagrahm i believe that has to be it also. Lots of good info here and people are very knowledgeable and willing to help! Its also nice to hear the reports on the fixes and if it worked or not. that is what makes it such a valuable resource. Good Luck

I recently bought a D40 Case IH 2002 model and am going to have to change the o-ring and gasket on the hydraulic piston, b/c I have a slow leak down also. My question is, once I have the seat off and removed the front cover where the piston is locateed, how do you get the piston out to change the seal and gasket. I have not taken it apart yet and just want to make sure I don't get in over my head. Do you have to take the complete cover off the top to get to the piston or will the piston just slide out once the front cover is removed? Will changing the seal and gasket completely solve my leak down problem? Thanks you are always the best to ask.

Well, Big, I have never done this, so a better person to ask might be JC Jetro who has refurbed a similar lift cylinder on his 1700 model. That said, I can relate to you the easy steps as described in my maintenance manual. Here is what it says (copied verbatim):
------------------------------------------------
1. Remove the flow control valve attaching bolts and nuts, and remove the valve and cover as an assembly.

NOTE: Cylinder liner may come off with cover and valve.

If the cylinder liner does not come out when the cover is removed:

2. Remove the cylinder liner through the front of the cover assembly.

3. Using a wood dowel, push the piston out of the liner through the head end.
------------------------------------------------

I would say that you should inspect the cylinder liner for scoring, but if it looks okay, you can replace the piston's o-ring and backup ring carefully. Install the liner back into the lift cover and be sure to position the piston rod inside the liner as it is re-assembled. The piston rod is not attached to anything, it just fits up into the back of the piston. Carefully insert the piston so that the new seals are not cut. This is where I can't offer any experience and there may be a trick to not damaging the seals. That's where you need expert advice. Here's a link to jc-jetro's thread where you can look at the parts.

This doesn't look like a terribly hard job to do if you are just careful and use your head. The D40 has everything in the open when you remove the seat, so you should have an easy job.

Oh yes...When you tighten the cover back down, the repair manual calls for the torque on the bolts to be 48 to 60 in-lb. Of course, you want to replace the cover gasket too.

I'm getting to this post late. I have the same fenders in a T2320, 12x12. All of my controls (PTO, 3pt, Hydraulics, etc) are located off of the fenders, on either side of the seat. I inquired about the fenders, and what might fit into them, and was told that the fenders were likely an "in-between model year fender", and for a tractor with hydro, rather than a 12x12. A bit frustrating, but I don't even notice them now.

Go with the toolbox recommended earlier in the post, it should fit nicely. The alternative tool box/cup holder, that mount on your fenders, I have pictured below, are cumbersome and in the way at best.

I think somebody is "blowin' smoke" to you about the fenders. I have seen non-deluxe gear model tractors since 2000. Everyone of them had the same fenders as the HST deluxe models, but had rubber fillers in the mounting holes for the side consoles and toolbox. BTW, the cupholder on the deluxe toolbox is a joke. It's best function is to catch rain water and dump it into your lap as you open the toolbox while standing on the ground. A piece of steel and a magnet on the bottom of a mug would make this a much better cupholder, but anything I've ever sat in that holder ended up on the ground and likely shredded with my rotary cutter.

EDIT: Is that photo of your tractor at your farm with all your tractors or at a dealer? If you own all those New Hollands, I'd bet you are on their Christmas List.:D

Jinman,

That was the tractor on the lot before I brought it home. I'm not satisfied with the answers I got either, but I suppose I'll have to live with it. When I saw the tractor on the lot, I thught the fender cutouts were for tollboxes, etc, that weren't installed yet. Clearly I was wrong.
