Oil & Fuel A quick 5 gallon fuel container rant

   / A quick 5 gallon fuel container rant #151
Ratchet straps have always worked on my fronts but it is often a goat-rope. Never had to deal with rears. When changing some large ag tires once the bead would not fully seat but would make enough contact to keep the air in. We just inflated a bit over the recommended pressure and waited. It took about 15 minutes and then boom, it popped on fully.

Back to fuel cans. Gempler's has large bore tubeless stems that might allow more air flow. They cost more, but they look like they have a nut for tightening it which would be nice. Not worth the trouble for me right now, but something to think about.

Thanks and much appreicated.

Is your drum fastened to the dolly or just setting on it loose?

Is this a vent? Where can i find something like that?

What fitting did you use to get from the pump down through the top of the drum?
Your welcome.
My drum just sets on the dolly. Haven't had a problem with it yet.
Yes, it is a vent.
You can get the Pneumatic Exhaust Mufflers from here.
MSC Item Detail
The fittings came with the pump kit. I had to buy the filter kit and the cord.
Cut the end off one end of the cord and wire it to the motor.
I have about $400 in this setup.
My right elbow is shot and I cant hold a fuel can over the middle of the hood to fuel my tractor.
I'd have to stand on the tire and hold the can straight out to fill the tank.
My fuel tank is underneith the hood.
It was cheaper this way than having surgury on my elbow.

The proper way to use ether on a rim and tire. Is to take the valve stem core out. That way, you dont have to worry about the tire exploding. People are just too lazy and leave the valve stem in. Thats when people take the risk of the tire exploding. Once the ether is lit and the tire is seated on the rim. You put the valve stem core back in and fill the tire with air.

2*Yes, it is a vent.

1*It looks like you have a nice smooth level concrete surface to roll the set up around on.
I have slag and a dolly like this don't move very good on it.
Besides I didn't want to store fuel in the garage especially since I hope to heat the garage someday.

That's why I put my set up in this building.
It's 37 feet from it to the nearest building.
I wanted 50 feet but didn't have enough room to get it.

2*Will water runback through this into your drum?

I vented my drum like this.It is the fitting on the drum that don't have the hose on it.If I knew for sure what you used for a vent wouldn't let water through it into my drum I'd change it.
3*These are neat and interesting.
I'm wondering if one of these could be used as a filter on the inlet end of the Suction tube or pump inlet hose to help prevent dirt etc from entering into the pump?
I just have a piece of aluminum screen wire attached to the hose with a hose clamp now.

4*I couldn't use the fittings you used and put the pump on top of the drum like this because then

all of these inlet fittings and hoses would have to have been installed inside the drum;a physical impossibility.
I had to set the pump on this shelf to allow me to plump the set up the way I wanted it plumbed.
5*Originally I had between $250 and $300 in my set up.
Since adding the second drum and the extra fittings and hose I'm probably around $300 to $350 on it now.
6*Sorry to hear about the elbow but maybe it would be a good idea to go ahead and get it fixed now.
********
I have several options on refilling the set up.
Option 1- Get fuel delivered. This is what I do.

Option 2-Set drum three in the pick up go get fuel in it and pump the fuel into drum 2 when I get back.
Option 3- Disconnect the union on drum 1 or drum 2 and take the drum to get fuel and pump the fuel into the set up when I get back.
As for options 2 and 3 I can also lift the drum off my truck with my tractor when I get back if I set the drum on a dolly in the pickup instead of just setting the drum on the floor of the bed.
With this set up I can pump fuel from any container =even the lowley 5 gallon cans being discussed in this thread.

The mufflers are only 40 micron. They will allow water to get into the drum. But, I've never had a water problem with my drum. I treat my drum of diesel when I take it in to have it filled.

You have a filter, so I would not worry about putting it on the inside of your drum. Your setup looks fine, I wouldn't change it if your not having any problems.

1* What I was wandering about is if you took the drum to fill it and it was raining hard going both ways would the rain water get through the muffler into the drum.
Sounds like it would by what you're saying.
If that's the case I agree that I should not change the Vents I have in my drums to the mufflers.
My drums can set out side in heavy downpours and the rain water can't get through them into the drums.
What appealed to me about the muffler for a vent is it appears it would make getting a tool on the cap easier when you need to remove the cap to fill the drum.
2*Neither have I .
3*I dump a quart of additive in the second drum while filling it.But I still want to prevent as much water as I can from entering the drum.
4*This filter only prevents stuff from getting from the pump to the tractor tank .
It does nothing to keep dirt crud or foreign objects out of the pump.
That's why I put a screen on the ends of my suction tubes and the transfer hose.
5*Thanks and so does yours.
6*Works great the way it is - so I think I will leave it alone.
Nice hearing from you and have a great day.
