. It's lacquer thinner or xylene ya don't want to use

I used "goof off" which has xylene in it. to remove the top layer of finish on the floorboard when I put the truck bed coating on them. It removed a little of the paint, which was my intent. I used white paper towels to rub it down, and they were a little orange when I got done. I sure would not use it on my hood.

Waxman,

Nice seeing you on here again! I was around when you were taking all that ribbing and changed your name!!

Where do you buy the odorless thinner?? Lowe's??

Deano

Hi Deano I got mine at Star hardware but I'm sure Lowe's will have something.
Just make sure it's odorless unless you like working with the smell of solvents.
You can use it for degreasing anything on the tractor. Just remember it's flammable. Keep the used rags outside or in a small metal trash can.

Mineral spirits works good, but I find it really dries out my hands, bringing on those painful finger cracks, especially in the winter. WD-40 works really well also, and is a lot easier on the hands. I buy it by the gallon and put in spray bottles. I spray everything that moves with it, and most of the stuff that doesn't. Equipment that sits out all the time really benefits from it.

We wax all 5 of the 8000 series John Deere tractors, the 2 4 wheel drives, the 4 grain hauling trucks and both 9750 combines. Then put in the shed. Helps hold there resale better. Lutt

I have a box of those cheap latex gloves that I use every-time I grease or clean the the grease on my tractor. My grease gun always makes a mess and this red grease sticks to everything. It never fails somehow the grease gun extension hose gets me and everything else every-time. When I'm done I just peel the gloves off and throw them away.
WD 40 is great for spraying on and leaving it on for protection but is a poor cleaner compared to this. it doesn't dissolve the grease as well and it doesn't leave a clean Wax-able :D finish behind and I can't take the smell after awhile.
I buy a "box of rags" that's what its called at the hardware store. Its cotton tee shirts. I pour a good amount of this odorless stuff onto the rag and just "wipe" the grease away. The grease dissolves and sticks to the tee shirt and doesn't smear it all around.
This brand paint thinner is very mild and seems more like white kerosine than paint thinner. I say that because its more oily than lacquer thinner I have no experience with other brands.

I use WD 40 all the time for many uses, when I first got my Kubota i sprayed it on all the bolts, nuts, washers and linkage underneath the tractor to keep the hardware with that yellow "factory finish" pretty sick hah

I would spray it all over my backhoe hardware, pistons etc. before covering it with a tarp for the winter. Sadly I did not do it this year. I slacked off a little in the last year and I have to do a little catching up.

My tractor is more of a toy for me rather than using it for a living or on a farm. For those of you that do, I can see where you would think Im crazy.
I do use it though 587 hours and counting, 500 of them mine. (Of course a lot of that time is idling out in the field with the AC on watching movies on the DVD ). :D kidding

I use either Simple Green or Oil Eater, as they're both safe for the finishes, hoses, etc. Takes a little more elbow grease, but does a decent job.

I have only waxed the hood of my tractor, and finished it off with detail spray. :ashamed: I only have expensive car care products on my shelves, so I guess that's why I haven't had the urge to wax the entire tractor.

One of the high end car care products forums had a contest each month a couple summers back looking for the most "interesting" items people waxed. I thought about entering, but I didn't really feel like thoroughly detailing the entire tractor. I spend enough time detailing cars before shows, and a tractor would have been a week's worth of work.

My wife likes to tell everyone I wax the tractor. I've only done the hood a few times. :confused3:

OK if you guys are going to do it any way here is a way to save a few bucks. Advance Auto parts discount codes. They have, waxes, rags, degreaser, cleaners and grease. It takes me an hour to find $50 worth with them and I pick up local. Free ship to home if $75 worth and if you spend $100 looks like a $50 off code.

John, isn't that called "enabling"...
Not sure but maybe. I like saving money if I'm going to spend it any way and enjoy helping others save if they are going to spend it any way.:D
