I did that two once. Had them make the materials list and call it in. Then I went to the supplier paid with my CC. I kept anything leftover and got the CC points/rewards to boot.

I made my own list. I built the house myself, so i knew exactly how much was needed. Not a shingle left over, i think i had to run in and pick up 1 more package though.
The labor was an amish crew. They stripped the old. I did not want to do that myself.

In my opinion, for clarity, if the job is "bid" by the contractor, they have the right to carry off everything left over.

If I'm paying labor and materials purchased with a total amount to be determined, it's all mine.

I remember growing up with my sisters, I’d hear the insult “Indian giver!” thrown about. As a kid I always pictured an Indian taking something back. Only later did I learn about our governments honor regarding treaties with native Americans and realized the term was about us (U.S.)!

Maybe, just maybe, there never was a post driver....
....There are people like that out there. MOST of it is driven by insecurity.....
....Why is this guy working with one hand and giving money away with the other?

Ooooh! The plot thickens!

....what is really driving Ol’ Bob?
...Was it the relationship he had with his father? Was he bullied as a child?!

Yep. Common misconception. :(

Maybe, just maybe, there never was a post driver. My BEST friend LIES to me continuously! It has NEVER hurt or even inconvenienced me. There are people like that out there. MOST of it is driven by insecurity. The price seemed way too low. Why is this guy working with one hand and giving money away with the other?

I have a relative that is EXACTLY like that,, she will lie just to feel her lips move,,
She was only a decade younger than me,, so I kinda grew up around her,,
if she was breathing,, she was lying,,, and,, no one could figure out why she would lie like that,,,

Is it going to rain today? Her answer would be that a hurricane was coming,, (we were having sunny skies,,,)
BEYOND the lying was the exaggerations,, She goes to gambling casinos frequently,, she has NEVER came home without winning,, EVER!!
The same goes for her trips to play bingo,,,

So, those people do exist,,,:confused2:

Ok so here's what happened today. I'm trenching a ditch with my backhoe while Bob's working. I finish, I'm installing a frost proof hydrant and 3/4 black plastic line.
We never talked. This afternoon he walks over "how do you get up leaves?".
"With a rake and pull behind sweeper" I say.
He says "then you wouldn't need a Trac Vac 880 would you?"
Long story short (and man would it make a strange book) Bob bought this place 6 miles from here. Huge house, a couple other houses on the place, huge buildings full of stuff (long-long story)...one thing of many I saw was a Prevost motor home (850k he said which is probably right).
Anyway this Trac Vac works fine...they're about $3500 new. He said for helping him...how about $450? And the edger. They worked...I had trailer and check with me.
I'm happy. 20190530_194616.jpg

re: abrogator? Post driver!#%@&

I did that to my dad once, on accident, I kinda feel like it was his own fault. Anyway I had an over under shotgun i didn't like anymore (got it for a steal, but it didnt fit me).

My parents were visiting and I asked dad if he wanted it, he said yes. So I said let's go to the store and you get a hardcase for it so you can take it home. He him hawed at 2 or 3 stores because they were too expensive this and that excuse. So it went back in the safe.

6 months later a guy wants it and offers 3 times what I paid so I sold it. I did remember dad and called and told him what happened, he didnt act mad. He bought a real fancy job later with adjustable stock and comb.

Glad bob hooked you up after all.

Reneging on deals has been going on since man could first communicate/negotiate...it's the reason we have binding contracts and also the reason there are so many scum sucking lawyers...!

It used to be a mans word was as good as it gets...a mans word of honor was worth more than his life...it was his life...

In our P.C. world we live by the judiciary and whoever controls the judiciary controls everything...!

re: abrogator? Post driver!#%@&

Thanks for replies.

Yesterday as we were working is when Bob mentioned post driver...would I like to buy it. It's for sale $300. I said "yes, I'd love to have it". After lunch he mentioned some guy driving a long distance to pick it up. I said "what!?!? You said I could buy it! Call him back, say it's sold". He said too late, he's on the way. Goes on to say "I didn't think you were serious". I repeated what I said...he said "well, I have to leave now to meet him...maybe he won't buy it".
I said no one is driving 3 hours one way and not get it. Then he said "I didn't know how expensive they were...but I priced it at $300, that's what guy is paying".
I feel screwed royally. I could have used it, needed it.
I'm taking my wife's advice...no more helping Bob.

I think Bob had a buyer before he even talked to you about it. He was just making small talk. Regardless, don't be a Bob.

re: abrogator? Post driver!#%@&

Yes, In the beginning it was stated Bob had the ad and he was getting a lot of calls. So Bob could of very easily had a discussion with the interested party, giving him details of the implement, his location, cost, etc.

Then during the day Bob ask the OP of his interest, and he's interested. In the mean time the guy interested in the implement heads out and then calls Bob to let him know he's on his way. Bob is now in a pickle. One guy coming and one guy says he wants it.

I can't blame Bob for selling it to the man he's already had a conversation with.

And just because he says it's a "post driver" does not make it a multi thousand dollar implement. I sold a post driver two years ago for something around that price, and was glad to get it off my place!! It was a hydraulic actuated accident waiting to happen. I wouldn't even loan it to a neighbor farmer to use. I told him I'd come over and use my tractor and operate it. I didn't want to end up in a law suit!!

Indian giver? Post driver!#%@&

I’ve been in similar predicaments. You list an add that gets a lot of interest, you can’t tell everyone sale pending because 3/4s or more of your potential buyers won’t show up, and if you don’t respond to the rest they’ll move along. Then someone who you didn’t think was a serious buyer calls that they’re on they’re way what are you supposed to do? I’ve never and won’t sell something out from under someone that’s on their way but someone that’s maybe coming later should’ve moved faster.

re: abrogator? Post driver!#%@&

Sounds like you hook up with very shady type contractors. It is unfair to apply that label to all. Did you count the material/brick and block when it was delivered and compare it to the invoices or are these å¡—and shake deals where youæ±*e paying flat rate?

MY brother owns his own Plumbing HVAC business, so I would never say that all contractors are the same. This is a regional issue generally, where a specific type of behavior once unheard of has become the norm. In my area the pole building "crews" are known to overbid jobs to the point of watching them take the stuff from the delivery truck directly to their pickups. I feel for those people who hire a contractor, but work full time and can't see what is going on. In some areas of the country this would be a crime, in others underhanded, and in others it is common.

I don't want to get into one of these TBN thread arguments, but the way I see it is this: if I ask for a bid to do a job, It isn't an invitation for you to increase profit margins by over ordering supplies for your next job. That is lying in my opinion. To be clear, I am not talking about the generally accepted practice of ordering the 10% extra for mistakes. I have met professional contractors who would consider the standard practice of order 10% extra to be wasteful, and it isn't part of their bids. What I am getting at is the guy who intentionally orders way to much and passes it on to the homeowner. Like I said, I am normally at the jobs on my property, and I generally know what would be required. For the uninitiated and uninformed, wow is there abuse.
