Oh boy. Both were common when I was growing up. Another is _ _ _ ing someone down on a price. All 3 are considered unacceptable now. Like you, never thought about it when I was younger. I guess it was a case of "monkey see, monkey do" or "monkey hear, monkey say". Is that offensive to monkeys?

REALLY? If you provide a bid to someone that includes extra material you intend haul away and use on another property that would be FRAUD! Unless you clearly state you are buying and taking extra material as part of your compensation up front you are stealing material paid for by your client.

Um no. He says he’ll build your barn for $50,000 materials included and he builds the barn and you pay him $50,000. Where’s the fraud? He didn’t say he was going to build your barn and leave a stack of materials for $50,000.

Yes, thinking about other people’s perspective is a good thing, despite being subjected to occasional ridiculous sensitivities.

Regarding the negotiating term. Reminds me of a friend who went to court to seek damages to his car. He wanted blue book value. Judge asked him what did he pay for car, which was less than blue book. Friend tells judge: “Shouldn’t I get market value of car and not be penalized just because I *#$ed the seller down and got a good price?”
Then he looked at the judges nameplate. Don’t remember the judge’s last name, but it might of ended in ‘stein or ‘berg. Oops.

You know, that could be about saving on delivery fees too. Instead of having 100 items delivered to Job A and 100 items delivered to Job B, maybe they have all 200 items for both jobs delivered to Job A and carry half of it to Job B so they don't have to pay a second delivery fee. That doesn't mean Customer A is paying anything extra though.

In my area the delivery is absorbed in the material cost and you wouldn’t save any money or likely loose money doing that. Locally lumber gets delivered free. Blocks get delivered for $25 if the quality is enough. The same place that sells lumber also delivers windows and trim for free. Purposely having more delivered is just a waste of your labor and equipment to move it again. Not to mention it looks bad even if it wasn’t anything shady.

Well, it goes like this. I was always told growing up that the phrase was directed at the europeans and U.S. government for not keeping their word to the native Americans. Yesterday, it was pointed out that while that may be the case, historically, the phrase was used by europeans that didn't understand the native Americans custom of giving a gift and expecting one in return. Google it up. There's a ton of reading. Then I started reading how native Americans feel about the phrase, and it was generally considered derogatory by them. So there you go. It's generally offensive even though I'm sure no one here would use it in that manner. It's just one of those phrases that should fade away. Then I started looking up synonyms for that phrase. There aren't any direct replacement phrases. I found abrogate came up several times in conversations about replacements for that phrase. I've never heard it used in my life, so I figured I'd put it out there just to make some folks look up what the heck is that word???

However, looking further, if it were me, I'd just use renege. The guy reneged on the deal (although it isn't real clear if he even remembered he made the offer to the O.P.). And good grief, don't go off on me about the possible misinterpretation of that word.
