A Frame farm house, 2br, 1 bath, open living room/kitchen with a loft roughly 1.8k sq ft.

Was origionaly built with just 3 window unit ACs and a wood stove for heat.

Had a guy come out and quote me a 4 unit mini split system... WOW, sticker shock... $19.7k!

Asked what a central system and said he could maybe fit in my crawl space but would have to run ducting up through the floor and closet to get to loft.. That was $11.7k...

Those who have mini splits, is that about what it cost?

Wondering if I should just stick with window units....

Get a couple more estimates, that is very excessive, almost 5K per unit! They are easy to install, you could probably do it yourself and then have an A/C guy come charge up the units.

I installed a Daikin (really high end brand like Mitsubishi, Fujitsu) in my rental unit about 3-4 years ago. My neighbor is a HVAC guy, so he purchased it for me and I did all of the install. He then came back and pulled a vacuum and fired the system up. The unit was a 26k or 29 btu unit with heat and air. My mom was staying in the rental at the time and likes it warm in the winter and the Daikin's are used a lot in Canada, so I figured they would definitely in OK for heat. This has three interior units connected to one exterior. If I remember correctly I did the whole thing for around 5 grand including about $500 given to my buddy for his help.
To me it sounds like that A/C guy does not want to sell them and just do conventional installs.
Good luck, Dave
P.S. Here is an online supplier, but I do not know about warranty issues buying online.

Last fall I had installed 2 Lennox air to air mini splits. One is 18k BTU and second is 9K BTU. Installed cost including wiring and HST was $5,500. Very pleased with both heat and AC. Wish I had done it sooner.

I would want a breakdown of the cost. I had a Mitsubishi single installed in my tack room 5 years ago for $2300, not including the running of the outside wiring which my electrician did when we were building. I can't imagine the cost has gone up that much. Here is a 4 zone unit for $4912.

Installed a ramsound (home depot) 12.5 k air/heat pump unit last may about 13 seer. Worked all summer and tried the heat a few weeks ago. VERY WARM it is whisper quiet. You tube was the biggest help $1000.00 plus 15 amp wiring. I rigged a vacuum pump to the line set and air handler for 30 min. then released the charged compresser refrigerant. (this is a must). next time i will move the outdoor compressor far enough so I do not have to coil the line set and and wire. Cost more than a window unit but this was more fun. keeps a very even temp with a remote control.

You wouldn't buy a vehicle from the 1st dealer that gave that you a quote would you ??? Like car shopping, get several estimates. then, when you decide on the contractor, have them give you references of people they have done work for

I have heated with wood for over forty years and three years ago we added Mitsubishi mini splits. We have three running off one outdoor unit, and one running on another smaller outdoor unit. We could not be happier with the set up. It was all hired out by a local contractor who only did ductless systems and was highly recommended by friends, and power company. They did a primo installation that was tidy, and just perfect. Technology wise, we think it is the most efficient use of power you can get. We noticed the Japanese Tusnami homes had them and that is what turned our head in that direction. They do NOT have the capacity to keep the place toasty when the temperature is in the teens or lower.
