actual use of tier 4

Anyone have actual experience with the new
tier. 4 engines? I read much about what
could be etc Looking at brochures from different Mfg of CUTs seems they each have their own way.

I had to pop in a warmer thermostat in my tier 4 final Kioti NX series to get the thing to stop regenerating every ten hours while running at a lower power output because the engine, if it did warm up, took forever to get up to operating temperature. Kind of an engineered-in-Asia, but-running-in-Minnesota's-fall, winter, and-spring problem, but the warmer T-stat has not effected summer performance and I'm a happy camper that I took the time to fiddle around and find a T-stat that would fit and perform right.

Out of warranty and I may install a test tube in place of the DPF and a zenor diode on reference voltage coming from the pressure differential sensor. That or use the DPF as justification for getting a really big sonic cleaning tank and offer DPF cleaning as a service to the county area.

Interesting, Eric. I'm not in favor of defeating the emissions system, but I really like your second idea if it's technically feasible. Projected DPF filter replacement cost is one of the concerns when folks talk about pros and cons of Final Tier 4 CUTS that use EGR technology rather than DEF dosing. I don't yet know how long it will be before the DPF needs replacing (guesstimate 2000 hrs?) or what they'll cost by then (years away with my usage!). But sonic cleaning sounds pretty cool. BTW, with UPS and FedEx, why limit your market to the county?!

The new production Mahindra MForce 105P uses DEF.

there's nothing in their online product line with that designation. ????

I have not had any problems or complaints with tier 4. It needed a regeneration at about 30 hours. I now have 70 hours and all is good. I do like the fact the exhaust does not stink like a regular diesel. Plenty of power and good economy.

I have seen one sitting on a dealer's lot. It had the DEF tank with the blue cap. It was a new unit.

As I understand it, there are currently two methods in use by the manufacturers to meet Final Tier 4 rules for CUTs: EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and SCR (selective catalytic reduction). The EGR method requires a DPF (diesel particulate filter) that eventually must be replaced, while SCR requires periodic injection of a DEF (diesel emission fluid) from an on-board tank that must periodically be refilled by the user. So no free ride with either system. I looked at the Mahindra link Oldballs gave and, sure enough, it's radio silent on the DEF requirements. Clicked on 'more detail" and was surprised at their claims regarding "the other guys," i.e. other manufacturers. "HIGH DEGREE OF OPERATOR INVOLVEMENT in the DPF process. Must turn DPF on and off when parked, and turn it back on when on the field." Hmm... That's certainly not the case with my Kioti N4510HST.

Nice summary. Almost ashamed to admit that I was unaware of the SCR method when researching the purchase of my new tractor:ashamed: Although, I suspect it would not have made any difference in my final decision. My focus was primarily remaining with Kubota, yet I also considered Kioti.

I have been looking at tractors for the last couple months and to be honest I don't think many of the salesmen know how this works. I have been told so many stories of how it works from different salesmen it has me scared of it. What I read here helps me out a lot. I started looking at used tractors to get away for tier 4 but will go back to new now. I just found out I may have to have heart surgey shortly so I have decided to wait until that is over with then I will go see the Kubota dealer again. Thanks for all the info here. Ivan
