I was kind of wondering about that paint job myself. Was he trying to make it a Deere Green? Or would it then get lost in the green bushes so go with a Red to make it visible?:) Next thing he will need is a strobelight on the end..:) No mater what color that is a good idea. So far I haven't had any issues with things slipping off the boom pole.

Nice job on the winch. A tractor should mean less work and less chance of injury. Until I added a quick hitch I think my tractor gave me more injuries. Continue to use your brains, and less muscle. Here are a few ideas about boom poles to consider:

I thought about boom poles a lot, and decided a steel loop at the end of a boom pole is very poor. The chain grab hook has to hang open side up and can slip loose easily. Once I moved my tractor about 1/4 mile and turned around to see the chain gone. It took a vary slow walk to find the chain.

My solution, plus more, was to use a steel plate with keyhole, holes for shackles, and a permanently attached chain. One end of the chain is grab hook, other is slip hook. This chain can never fall off, and length can be adjusted in seconds.

A 2x2 receiver at the tip of the boom is used for my "stinger" which is 2x2 steel tubing to give me more lift height or reach. A hydraulic top link lets you change the boom angle, giving more lift, and a receiver at the 3pt connections allows me to pull a trailer with the boom attachment. During a beach cleanup I could pull next to a log and back up to jack knife the trailer, with the boom tip over the load. After lifting the log I would just drive forward and the log would be over the trailer.

Your last pic with the windmill had me thinkin' counter-balance. Think I would have had the PHD drilled into the ground! :D

wow-I need something like this to reach in and snag blackberry bushes, perhaps with something like ice tongs on the end- has anyone made up such a devise? any ideas?
I have several huge patches of blackberries and clearing by hand is-well-they grow faster then I can clip them.

The tires are loaded and to lift the mil tower I had to chain the legs and drive backward. The lift capacity is plenty even with no additional ballast. I really do not like the auger design at all and can't wait to upgrade.

A concrete contractor showed me something that might work for the blackberry. He used a pallet puller on a bobcat to pull his form stakes. The thing has wicked spikes that would grab anything and hold tighter as it pulls harder. I bought one from him for $30. It works for saplings.

Northern Tool has 2 models of the pallet puller.
2000 lb is $34.99 and 5000 lb is $49.99

They also have small stump pullers. I opted for the larger version which Northern does not carry yet, with a 5" capacity But costs over $130
