Is it possible to add caster styled wheels to a brushhog to improve the quality of the cut? My brushhog scallops the pasture here and there due to it being a little uneven. Will the extra wheels stop the scalloping or am I barking up the wrong tree? Should I ignore the problem or should I till the pasture, smooth it out and start with a clean slate?

I had this same exact idea when I first got my tractor.
I posted about it on one of the other forums here.
Adding 4 Wheels to a Bush Hog

If you look at the difference between a finish mower and a bush hog you will notice that the finish mower sets back further to accomodate the wheels in front of it. It also has a longer drive shaft.

I had to forget the idea cause there wasn't enough room between the rear wheels and the bush hog to mount wheels.
So another idea is to put a wheel on each side behind the bush hog and use limit chains on the front. This would help greatly.
Also use sway bars.

I managed to get a cheap finish mower and now hardly use my bush hog.

Wheels on a bush hog are a good idea.
Won't be as nice as a finish mower but will be improved some.

I see in your bio that you have a "scarifier". If that means a boxblade with scarifiers, I would use that to knock down the high spots, and not try to re-engineer the rotary cutter. If it has a flexible toplink bracket, they got it right.

I've thought about this, too. I bought a real heavy duty caster wheel at TSC and mounted it on the side, rear of my Gravely cart to keep it from tilting back while attached to my 3 pt drawbar of the JD. This kind of caster wheel would be nice mounted on the sides up near the front of the bush hog. I adjusts for height and can be rotated out of the way. Not quite sure it has enough up adjustment to get it up high enough if it's bolted to the side of the bush hog. Of course, it would stick out to the side a bit. You'd have to allow for this in going near trees and backing into garages, etc.

Looks dangerous. What do you use that for mostly?

My front yard flooded for years during the rainy season. Beings I live in Washington State, that's most of the year. I used the ripper to loosen the soil in hopes that it'll drain. It worked! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I also removed my telephone service with it. Here's the story of that adventure.

If you get the castors that have a bolt where the flat for mounting is on the one pictured, you can weld a couple of sections of pipe to the front of the mower deck where they wouldn't interfere with the tractor's wheels. They'd do a heck of a lot better at preventing scalping than limit chains when the ground contour changes.

Possibly even those deck style 'rollers'

I truly think adding wheels to the front of a brushhog is a bad idea, no offense to anyone though. Hogs, more so than mowers are designed to cut rougher ground. I think you would need a very heavy-duty caster to handle the typical use. Even if you don't typically use yours for such rough work, I think there is a much better way. If you have a floating/flexible top link, which you would have to have for front casters anyway, use "check chains". There's been plenty of prior discussion, including pictures, in other posts, so just do a search. Even with only one rear wheel, you'll notice a 100% improvement. I can honestly say I never scalp with this setup. Two wheels in the rear would be nice, but don't seem like they would improve things a whole lot.
