I have an 8’ single horse trailer converted to a utility trailer and im gonna build a dump bed on top of the existing floor with a gin pole type set up for dumping a load..
im not sure what size channel or what type of steel I want to use for the new trailer bed since it will be the frame of the bed once installed and I will be lifting the load to dump using the frame I build..

Do some math, it would be really easy to end up with an overweight situation before you put any material in your new dump trailer. There is lots of information on the web about the weight of steel.

You might just want to buy a forklift skip dump and put that on your trailer. Or better, put an axle and a drawbar under that

Keep in mind that a single horse trailer is built to carry a single horse, tack and maybe some feed, so, 1500-2000 lbs or so........

Look at the tilting box part of a similar sized dump trailer to see how it is framed.

Stupid is as stupid does..
I guess you’re some hot shot dreamer..
Difference being imma make my dream come true..
The fenders get in the way of using a bucket to empty the trailer..
Just need steel floor for msterial to slide..
I’m retired with nothing but free time on my hands to dream, build and excavate..

This is a four wheel 3/4 ton set up I believe.. handles a heck of a load..

You might find some ideas looking at insert dump beds for pickups.

Here's one:

...and look at pickup dump bed conversion hardware and framing, ignoring the parts that don't fit your project.

Trailers are not rated that way. That's a pickup thing and even with them, has essentially zero basis in any sort of reality. Do you know what the axle rating is on this trailer? "A heck of a load" can mean an extraordinarily wide range of things, depending on who you're talking to.

Some of the replies sound kinda harsh. If construction is kept to a minimum weight wise I don't see why this cannot be made to work within limits. HF has some cheap 12v winches that can lift a ton or more. That should pull the bed up using a gin pole. If you have welding skills consider removing the existing floor and building a full dump bed. Whatever you decide show some pictures. GL
