Adding a bathroom linen closet, where would you put the door?

Interesting Idea, there is a light switch that would have to be moved, but my bigger concern is I think the hallway (where the door would open into) might be load bearing. And that is way more work that I would like to get into. But I like the concept. Thanks.

always happy to stretch the original idea....especially when someone else is doing the work...........Jack

Well then I can hire a contractor, and send you the bill right? J/K

Make the bathroom door open out into the hallway. This does a couple things for you.

It gives you plenty of room to open the closet door.
It gives you a light switch right inside the door.
If someone collapses in the bathroom, their body won't block the door.
You could fit a wheelchair into the bathroom.

Only drawback is you can hit people in the face coming out of the bathroom, and you can walk into the door edge in the dark if its left open, which can be resolved with a self closing hinge (thanks aczlan).

Ours opens out, and I like it. Gives a lot more room in a very small bath.

My house has no pantry and only one non-bedroom closest, so storage space is inconvenient and cramped. I planning on removing a 66" long vanity from guest/non master bath, and installing 36" vanity, and using the rest as closet. Cant seem to decide where to put the hinge/ which way the door should open. Not interested in folding/bi folding doors, slider not possible. (Digital) penny for your thoughts?

Hopefully you can get a general idea from my rough, mostly to scale sketch. 'V' for hinge near vanity, or 'W' for near wall. The new closet door would likely be about 24", so it would hit the main bath door if trying to open both at same time, but if main door already open, no issues...

Definately the wall. Checked w/ the Mrs and she said the wall also. She said if your in the bath, the main door would be closed, you forgot to get a towel, you can open the closet towards the closed main door much easier than grabbing the door knob close to the wall, stepping back in order to open the closet.

I did almost exactly what you are planning to do. I also did not like a bi-fold solution so I went to Home Depot and bought a bi-fold door and an additional 3 hinges. I separated the halves of the bi-fold and mounted each half separately. See pic.

Go to a place like IKEA and get the vanity, matching mirror medicine cabinet and a vertical side cabinet. They have vanities that are wall mount (clear space under) and all drawers. The drain goes against the wall. Very slick and extremely well built. We are planning a re-do and going that way. They even have shallow cabinets that work for over the toilet. ikea.com

One word: Pocket Door

oh well, make that 2 words. Swinging door either way is going to eventually conflict with traffic and either be a bloody nose for one patron, or at the minimum a clash for one.
Folding doors seldom hold up all that well. Historically, mine have either begun to hang up when opening, or don't close completely very well. Maybe mine were just the cheap models, I don't know...

Pocket doors, while take a good deal more work to install, are great space savers. Consider how much area swinging doors require to be reserved, and the cost per square foot of your home, and you'll see the economics of them as well as the convenience.

Two of our bathrooms have closets in similar locations, and both have closet door hinges on the wall side. For normal use it provides the best access to the closet and is only an issue if someone tries to open the bathroom door while 1) someone else is in there and has the door closed, and 2) the person in the bathroom has the closet door more than halfway open. If doing mine again, I would do the same as it is now.
