I love pocket doors but can't see how it would work in this case. There is no wall to slide the door into.

oh well, make that 2 words. Swinging door either way is going to eventually conflict with traffic and either be a bloody nose for one patron, or at the minimum a clash for one.
Folding doors seldom hold up all that well. Historically, mine have either begun to hang up when opening, or don't close completely very well. Maybe mine were just the cheap models, I don't know...
Pocket doors, while take a good deal more work to install, are great space savers. Consider how much area swinging doors require to be reserved, and the cost per square foot of your home, and you'll see the economics of them as well as the convenience.
