I would like to purchase a Root Grapple for my Kubota L35.

The company I am considering purchasing this through is telling me not to purchase the specific Grapple hydraulic control, the solenoid opperated valve set up that converts the bucket joy stick to the Grapple control with a push of a button and instead use one of my 3 spool control valves for the scrapper specifically the ripper control.

I have never had or used a Grapple before and would like to get comments from those who have. Is getting the traditional Grapple control worth it or should I just use one of the 3 spool controls?

Your right hand can only be at one place at a time, so I am thinking that being able to go back and forth between Grapple control and Bucket control without moving your hand would be the best way to go.

How awkward is it to use the 3 spool control for the Scrapper to control the Grapple?

I am looking at the Gearmore Grapple...anyone have a better idea?

There are volumes of info here on grapples and how to control them. Generally, many of us feel the Markham grapple is the best deal out there, but I am unfamiliar with the Gearmore you mentioned. Most, including me, are very pleased with their Markhams. Mine is on a M6800, which I think, is a little bigger than your L35. With 35 hp and a lift capacity of 1650 lbs.(I think this is correct), you could go with Markham's light duty or standard duty versions. They are about the same but one has heavier 1/2 steel. Either would work, depending on your usage. If you plan to do lots of digging and tree uprooting, maybe go with the heavier. If you plan on moving debris mainly, the lighter duty would work fine. Not sure of current prices, but probably $950 vs. $1400 for each, in a 48" model, which is what I would recommend.

As far as controls, I went with a true electric over hydraulic system made by WR Long, which is the costliest way to go, but I have the control as a switch on my loader control knob. Others do just fine with other systems, which are cheaper. It's a matter of personal preference, and depends on your budget. You also have to consider the quick attach system on your loader. I assume it is universal skid steer type quick connect. If not you have to buy an adapter, which is costly. Hope this helps, and if you have other questions, I am sure there are many experts who will respond

I have followed your advice Harold and ordered a medium duty (1/2") grapple from Markham Welding along with a QA pallet fork.

I was going to use one of the valves on the 3 spool control on the rear fender to control the grapple, but the more I think about it this would be very awkward to use. I might as well set it up right from the beginning.

Do you have an Internet source for the WRLong true electric over hydraulic control you mention in the above post? Do you know the approximate cost of this control unit?

I have purchased an ATI Quick-Tach adapter for my TL720 loader.

Thanks for your help.

WR Long only sells through their authorized dealer network. Give them a call they are great to work with. If you don't have a local dealer I am sure Carver, listed above, can help you.

I have the WR Long 3rd function diverter valve with a push button control on the joystick... very easy to use. It's on a L35 also. The grapple is WR Long also, with ATI Quick-Tach . Good strong set up, very pleased so far.

Hello HarleyMonster, just read your question, but looks like its already been answered. As others stated, cost was around $575 if I recall from WRLong. I ordered it through my dealer and they installed it. I did talk to Nelson personally and e-mailed him also so he will communicate with you (don't know if he will sell to a non-dealer). You will be very happy with this set-up. The install looks fairly easy, but does require a little welding to attach the bulkhead fitting to the loader. Make sure you get the whole kit including the bulkhead fitting and hydraulic lines. Also plan to buy some sheathing from a hydraulic shop to encase the two hydraulic lines running to the front to protect them. They sort of dangle around and need securing and protection from abraision as it would be relatively easy to snag them when diving into thick brush.

Thank you to all who replied.

I really do prefer to shop on the Internet, I find I get much better service than the local dealers provide and the cost is usually lower.

The WR Long Kit works fine - the only issue is they send the low rated psi hoses and they leak at the crimps - Other than that they work fine...if you go to a dealer they may replace or swap the cheeep hoses and make hoses for the psi you need. PAIGE TRACTORS replaced both hoses when they leaked at the crimp.

The cost installed was $690.00

Also I built my own grapple ... and you should look into a brush guard..or you will end up like the JD guy with a new hood ornament!

I went with the full Electric over Hydraulic W.R. Long kit, purchased from Carver, and it installed very easily and works as advertized. Nelson at W. R. Long answered a couple questions for me and was very helpful.

I purchased my grapple from Markham Welding, a 48" version made out of 3/8" steel and I am very happy with it.

Melissa at Markham is very nice, efficient and a joy to work with. I also purchased a set of Pallet Forks, a QA bucket adapter and a tooth bar from them and everything is of very high quality.

I live on the West Coast and shipping from Markham was efficient and economical.

I highly recommend all three of these companies.
