I have a light duty 16' , tandem axle utility trailer without brakes. I am looking to add brakes on both axles and need some information. The 10" x 2 1/2" electric brake and drum kits are around $200 per axle. I can buy a new 3500# Dexter axle complete with brake assembly for $225 each from my Kubota dealer who sold me the trailer when I bought my tractor. Local trailer dealers want about $300 for the same. The difference is I am not paying freight if I buy it from my Kubota dealer because it will come with one of their trailer orders just added in.

Do these prices sound about right?? Heck I didn't pay but $1,000 for the trailer in the beginning and now about half more to add brakes??

Ever try to build a car from parts bought 1 at time? Probably be over a million $$$.

$225 is a good price for the axle.

when you put the new axles in, you can probably put the old ones up on Craigslist for $100-150 each (unless you have a project that needs the old axles)... makes the new axle cheaper.

Thanks, I had not thought of that and that does take a little of the sting out of it.

Over here in Holland, you wouldnt get much trailer for 1000 dollar, or 750 ? euro.
For 750 euro (including 19% VAT) you get a 750 kg single axle, no brakes, 2.50x1.30 meter trailer.

It seems that trailers are much cheaper in north america than here, but $ 1000 isnt much anyways.

We, as a trailer builder, get rebates (for factory standard mounting) on trailer components, varying of 25 to up to 50%

Buy the new dexter axles.. they sound like a good price and will be a drop in deal.. and then just run their wires together and then up to the plug, and then swap to a 6 or 7 pin plug.. etc... then get a brake controller for your truck... keep or sell the other axles, as has been said.
