445C, how to turn hard to reach crank shaft to turn engine over to proper valve positions? Is it necessary to remove the fan belt to reach crank shaft?

This is another one of those places where you need to make choices. Quite often what I do is use the starter. Provided of course the solenoid is accessible. Reach in and remove the wire from solenoid spade terminal. In its place slip on a piece of wire with a female spade terminal. A wire long enough to reach the battery positive post. Use that to bump the starter in small increments. I don't worry so much about crankshaft position. I look for a valve rocker arm that's down and adjust the valve next to it. Mark that rocker with soapstone and bump the starter again until a different rocker arm is down. Adjust the valve next to it. Mark that rocker arm and repeat until all the rockers are marked. Sometimes you can turn the engine in small steps by pulling on the fan blade while pushing in the belt somewhere. That works in some cases but not all. It's kind of hard on the fingers sometimes, but it works.

If you can access the front of your engine you may be able to get a socket and ratchet or breaker bar onto the bolt at the front of the crankshaft. If you can access the ring gear on the flywheel you may be able to grab a tooth with a screwdriver and turn it that way.

Thank you. I bumped the starter. It was simple.
