OK, Let me clarify my question. On this JD site: https://e-marketing.deere.com/collab/customer/ViewAllProducts.do

it says the following tractors can mow up to x acres:

X300 up to 3.5 acres (regardless of model and deck size)

X500 up to 5 acres (again regardless of model and deck size)

X700 up to 7 acres excep the X729 up to 10 acres.

Why the X729 can mow 10 acres but the X749 can mow only 7?

I am sure the X300's can mow 10 acres but perhaps take a bit longer. So, I am wondering on what criteria does JD or others use to determine the max reasonable acrerage to mow

Could they be referring to .......ie 7 acres... before needing refueling?

I have no intention of asking the mfr. It is not that important. I was just curious as to what the members here thought.

I am beginning to think it is based on perhaps 2 to 4 hours of max mowing time in a day. I suppose it is estimated by the width of the deck, and how fast a particular mower can cut it. But, when they specify a capability in tenths of an acre, that implies that there is some relatively precise criteria. I don't belive it to be that precise.

But for the X300/38" deck vs X340/54" deck example, for them to both be rated for up to 3.5 acres, then one is led to believe that since the 54" unit cuts 42% more width, then it would therefore, cut 42% slower. I don't believe this either because the 54" unit has 25HP and the 38" unit only 17HP.

Anyway, it is not important and I don't intend to ask the mfr, but if someone has thoughts, I am interested...

I took two minutes and sent the question to John Deere. If/when I hear back I will post what they say but I also included a link to this thread so hopefully they will log on and answer it themselves.

OK, I went back to the specs. It is interesting the the X300 and X340 both have 3.5 gallon tanks - rated for 3.5 Acres. X340 may have more power to mow it faster, but would sip fuel faster too. So, perhaps 1 acre per gallon would do.

The X540 has a 5 gallon tank and it is rated for 5 acres. Again, 1 acre per gallon.

But, the X749 has a 6.5 gallon tank, is Diesel and rated for 7 acres. So a little more than 1 acre per gallon would make sense. Except that the X729 is gas and has the same 6.5 gallon tank but is rated for 10 acres. I think maybe a typo or the X729/X749 ratings are reversed. But, then again, the X748 is also Diesel and rated for the 7 Acres also...

I had an x540 for a couple weeks before trading for my 2305...I can tell you without a doubt, the x540 will not cut 5 acres before refuel. maybe 3

I'm guessing thatthe marketing guys calculated that a person wants to spend "X" number of hours a week cutting his grass, wants his machine to cut that grass "Y" weeks a year and last "Z" years and come up with a semi arbitrary number. I'd use it as a rough guide, a rule of thumb, not as something that is exact and can be recalcuated into fractional bits.

I think it is just a general recommendation on what the tractor is capable of doing on a regular basis and holding up. It would be like saying a cheap box store tractor is ok to use for up to an acre.... a higher end garden tractor is ok to use for up to 5 acres... etc. I don't see it as having hours per acre figured in at all. Just a guideline of what the tractor is capable of handling.

Maybe how many acres you can expect to mow before the JD breaks down:mad: ..Just kidding:D Will be interesting to see what the dealer says.

I think it is a misprint and the 749 should have been changed to 10 hours. Probably used a block copy. This would not be the first time they got something wrong in their literature.

The reason for 10 hours on the 729 and 749 is four wheel steering. They left that out of the feature list. That is the most important feature of the 7x9 series. Go figure.

I'm sure that means 10 hours per day. How long is a day? Sunrise to sunset or 24 hours? They do have headlights:)
