I have a 12K lb Harbor Freight winch. I see there is a towbar adapter to attach one of the many winch mounting plates out there. Quest is what is the best way to get power to that winch?

Big cables directly to the battery clamps and switched solenoid to provide power to the positive. My dealer that did my ATV winch just uses the low beam setting to close the solenoid. It can pull down the battery quite a bit with more that one pull even with the ATV running, but I guess the tractor has relatively bigger battery and charging system. There must a lot of youtube videos on how to wire up winches.

Big winches pull tremendous amperage (current) under load, best cable would probably be #4 or #2 welding cable.... Do not be surprised under hard pull winch will severally drain battery and even maybe kill battery and alternator...

As for connecting winch to tractor system if winch will only be on tractor occasionally I would suggest Anderson Power Poll connectors, something in the 350 amp (or larger ) range...

Might also want to read this forum entry...

Big cables and those Anderson couplers.

I use those Anderson couples for large current solar battery arrays in the field.

Upgrade your alternator, while you are at it....
Yep. At full load, the 12K Harbor Freight APEX winch draws 448 Amps. A tractor alternator probably puts out in 40-50 Amp range. Speed at full load is 4.7 FPM. You won't pull heavy loads very far without draining your battery.

Run big cables directly to the battery. Just be aware that those winches are recovery winches. They can only stand up to one short distance pull without long periods to cool down. The winch or the tractor electric system can’t stand up to prolonged use.

There’s really no need for that. The duty cycle for electric winches is very low. You’ll smoke the winch with repeated pulls without long periods to cool.

all this talk about winches and batteries and alternators and 4 - 5 hundred amp draws has me thinking.

Why not run the winch off the PTO and leave electricity out of the whole picture?
Or hydraulics? What a great excuse to install a third function?
My tractor has the third function and rear remotes.
I think If I go with a winch it will not be electrical.
