Cute little toolroom / second operation lathe. Not much in the way of swing or overall bed length either. I'd say it weighs less than 1500 pounds (US).

If I were building a crane that would go off-road, I would get the biggest casters I could and gusset the connection between the top rail and side legs more.

(Should I recover the beams for the horizontal beam and the columns for the legs, what material and section do I use beam and tubular or all H or U profiles? What a section. If you have useful photos or drawings I invite you to send them in the discussion thanks)

I agree with most above, if going off concrete the biggest wheels available are very important, I think I know the salvage yard bcp is referring to and they do work real nice.

I have one but it has ~4" casters so it is limited to smooth concrete.

I would get the casters as far apart as reasonable and as high as you have available, two trollies and two chainfalls make it way nicer to use for most things...

I'm not sure what's commercially available in Italy but if you have the ability making something shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Grazie.

Never side load a crane.

Power hoists are nice for repeatable large loads. Manual hoists offer high precision adjustments.

Power or chain travel along the beam a nice feature.

Not a bad idea actually but if I ever got one, would have to have other than solid rubber tires. I load and unload trucks at the shop but I use one of my M9000 Kubota's with the SSQA forks on the loader arms. Solid rubber tires are instant stuck on gravel or loose dirt. We don't have a loading dock anyway so everything gets side loaded and unloaded. Steel deliveries are the big PITA simply because of the weight of the steel but so far, the M9's have handled it.

If for some reason I had to load or unload something beyond the lift capabilities of them, the farmer down the road has a BIG JLG telehandler I can borrow and my SSQA fork set fit on his JLG.
I have a 5,000# lift with worn cushion wheels and a gravel driveway. When the ground is dry I have no problems with traction but I have to avoid wet soft ground as I only have 1-2" of ground clearance at the drive wheels.

When I built my shop I made provision for a monorail crane.I picked up the forklift with triple mast and side shift and I can go 16'. I can do everything the crane can plus a whole lot more with the forklift. You need really good and level concrete floors to use a gantry crane effectively. The crane idea is now history. A bridge crane can be handy but can't touch a used forklift price wise. Certified cushion wheeled propane forklifts are everywhere and dirt cheap.
