The good news is there are probably thirty machines that fit your requirements. The bad news is there are probably thirty machines that fit your requirements.
Some things I would consider are sub compact, versus compact tractors, and the full on TLB (Tractor Loader Backhoe) models.
Sub compacts like the John Deere 1026r and the Kubota BX25 or Mahindra Max tractors offer a nice all in one package, and it can be easy to get sucked into the utility of such a nice package because the prices are very competitive, the challenge you will have is right sizing your tractor to the tasks you have planned. The smaller compact utility tractors with back hoes don't have as much digging capacity (can't do deep work) which isn't a problem if your back hoe work is akin to pulling smaller stumps, digging ditches and things of that nature. If your backhoe work is a majority of what you need to accomplish, like digging a foundation, or uprooting large stumps, you'll want a larger machine)
When it comes to the TLB models, like the John Deere 110 or the Kubota B26, or L39 these machines are much larger, heavier, and capable.(read expensive)
As mentioned, it's a balancing act.
Also, if you are looking at a fair amount of three point hitch work, I'd steer clear of "quarter inching valves" and stick with a model that offers position control.
Go to all of your local dealers, test drive all the machines your interested in, and drive a hard bargain, it's a buyers market.
Don't be afraid to ask for an at home demo, a lot of dealers will bring you a machine you are interested in for the weekend to make sure it meets your needs.
Last bit of advice, USE THIS SITE! The people on here are fantastic, offer great advice, and often think of things you may not (such as having the dealer add at least two rear remotes because even if you don't need them now.....you will at some point)
Have fun tractor shopping!
