Advice on purchasing my first "real" tractor

The good news is there are probably thirty machines that fit your requirements. The bad news is there are probably thirty machines that fit your requirements.

Some things I would consider are sub compact, versus compact tractors, and the full on TLB (Tractor Loader Backhoe) models.

Sub compacts like the John Deere 1026r and the Kubota BX25 or Mahindra Max tractors offer a nice all in one package, and it can be easy to get sucked into the utility of such a nice package because the prices are very competitive, the challenge you will have is right sizing your tractor to the tasks you have planned. The smaller compact utility tractors with back hoes don't have as much digging capacity (can't do deep work) which isn't a problem if your back hoe work is akin to pulling smaller stumps, digging ditches and things of that nature. If your backhoe work is a majority of what you need to accomplish, like digging a foundation, or uprooting large stumps, you'll want a larger machine)

When it comes to the TLB models, like the John Deere 110 or the Kubota B26, or L39 these machines are much larger, heavier, and capable.(read expensive)

As mentioned, it's a balancing act.

Also, if you are looking at a fair amount of three point hitch work, I'd steer clear of "quarter inching valves" and stick with a model that offers position control.

Go to all of your local dealers, test drive all the machines your interested in, and drive a hard bargain, it's a buyers market.

Don't be afraid to ask for an at home demo, a lot of dealers will bring you a machine you are interested in for the weekend to make sure it meets your needs.

Last bit of advice, USE THIS SITE! The people on here are fantastic, offer great advice, and often think of things you may not (such as having the dealer add at least two rear remotes because even if you don't need them now.....you will at some point)

Have fun tractor shopping!

Hi All,
I'm looking to purchase my first "real" tractor for projects around the yard and could use some advice on what to look for. I'd like a tractor with a bucket and backhoe, and over time add other accessories like brush hog, fence post digger, blade...etc. For the projects I have in mind I think I'm looking in the 25-35 hp range, but can't break the bank in the process.
What are some of the key features I should look for?
If I buy something used (like a Kubota B2710 HST 4x4 with no bucket or backhoe) will I have a hard time finding parts / accessories for it?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Temba

Welcome to TBN--join the fun:laughing:

No problem finding parts for Kubota B-and BX- series tractors--but expect to pay a bundle (my first tractor was a 2005 Kubota B7510HST with the LA302 FEL--cost $12.6K new). Accessories--no problem finding mowers, blades, PHDs--again it's just a matter of money so shop around.

Drive the tractors, find one that feels right. Options you might consider: rear hydraulic remotes (2 pair is nice), chain hooks on the FEL bucket, skid steer quick attach for the FEL.

Good luck.

Thanks Flusher / CAgnoli / Mike476.
This site is super helpful! I appreciate all the advice.

Now what do you have for sticker shock?..

I visited the local Kubota dealer today. They're asking $27K for B3300SU w/FEL, backhoe and 48" brushhog.....WOW!! How much "fat" do they build into their pricing?

Looks like I'll have to target 25hp machines.

Tomorrow I'll visit Massey Ferguson, JD and Craigslist!

Thanks

Not being nosey but what's your budget? That will help advise u on a tractor.

Remember Kubota has 0% for 60 months right now. That helps.

Also how much land are u running the tractor on?

A good used tractor would be a Kubota L3130, 3430 or 3830. They are out there and can be had at a reasonable cost.

Here in SC a dealer is running a package special. You can get a brand spanking new Kubota L3800 hydro, front end loader, mfwd, Woods bush hog, box blade, nice double axle trailer with ramps and trailer breaks for.....drum roll please......$22,500!!! They deliver too.

Given that you have Kioti and TYM dealers not too far away, take a look at them too. They are a lot less pricey than Kubota for an equivalent configuration. Good luck in your search.

Good point PapaPerk..
I have 2 lots, one at 2 acres of which ~1 acre is lawn the 2nd lot is 22 acres of which ~3 acres is field. The 22 acre lot has several cut trees laying around as the previous owner was going to run them though his saw mill. These are mostly pine ~10' long and 10-12" in diameter.
I'll have to move these as well as 2 large piles of field stone he has collected over the years.

I was targeting $16K as my max for used or new with FEL, BH and mower deck or brush hog.

I am leaning towards new as I don't know much about tractors (although I'm learning a lot thru this site!) and like the idea of a warranty for 2-3 years.

After test driving 2 machines today, I'll have to raise my max if I want new...don't tell the wife!!

I test drove a Massey Ferguson 1526 and JD 1026R. Both with FEL, mower deck, and backhoe. Asking $21,500 for the JD and I'm guessing ~20K for the MF...the sales manager was not in so could not get a price. Also looked at Kubota B2320 TLB with mower deck priced at $23,300 and BX25 TLB and deck priced at $19,250.

RollingsFarms - $22,500 for all that! WOW. I wonder what delivery to NH would be...

GreenWannabe - My local Kubota dealer also sells TYM. I asked about the TYM and he said the prices would be very similar...? I will look again at TYM as others have said they should be less expensive as well.

Thanks all

Which size you need would depend alot on what you plan to do with the remaining 16 acres or so. From what I hear so far I would choose a small compact over a sub compact, more ground clearance and generally alot more ability to handle the larger jobs. I would choose something in the 30 to 40hp range if you plan to clean up the whole place, lots of these used compacts in your price range. My next door neighbor has a Deere 990 with fel and backhoe and gets alot accomplished with it, paid $12,000 for it used. No problems with it in the last three years.

If you are only interested in the four open acres you could get by with a 1026R, this can handle a large variety of small jobs with lots of attachments available. IMO though I think you would be better served with a good used compact tractor to fix the place up nice then buy a new kick butt mower or zero turn to handle the mowing long term.

Thanks Steve.
I think i agree with you. The sales guys tell me sub compacts will be plenty, but
I am a bit concerned about the lack of ground clearance. I think they would do well on the finished And semi-finished areas, but not sure about the rougher areas. I,d hate to spend this kind of money and be limited by ground clearance and power. I do have a decent finish mower , so that end is covered for now.
Nice puppy!
